An Incident that nearly wrecked Prince Herbert's career and that caused the old chancellor great annoyance was Prince (then count) Herbert's elopement with Prluceas Cnrolath Heuthen. the wife of Prince Karl, the head of that distinguished Silesian house. The princess was o'f the HaUfetdt family, and young Bismarck at tbe time was hi* father’s private secretary. Count Herbert lived with the princess In southern Italy for a few seeks and then, at the command of his father, returned to Germany. The princess afterward was divorced and has since died. Tbe title of Prince Bismarck and tbe large fortune of the deceased will go to bis seven-year-old son Otto. Tbe late Emperor Frederick gu Chancellor Bismarck extensive forests at Friedrichsruhe. which have increased in value, and the chancellor gave to Prince Herbert 92.400,000 in securities and cash. Tbe estate Is now estimated to be worth 94.000,000. exclusive of all
Prince Herbert Bismarck, who was born in 1840, was the eldest son of tbe late Prince Otto Bismarck, the great chancellor of the German empire. He studied law In the Berlin and Bonn universities,- served in tbe ITusqJan army as a lieutenant of reserve* during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71 and was severely wounded at tbe battle of Mare-la-Toui. In 1873 Herbert became an official of tbe department of foreign affairs and was assistant to hU father, then chancellor. He was attached' to the German legations at Bern and at Vienna from 1874 to 1877. Later on tbe deceased became conn cOor of the German embassy in London and subsequently occupied the same position at St Petersburg. In 1884 be was appointed minister extraordinary at Tbe Hague, and In' 188.' he became undersecretary of state In the department of foreign affaire. This post Herbert held until the dismissal of his father from the chancellorship, when be left the service of tbe empire. From 1884 to 1887 the deceased was a member of tbe German relchstag ami also from 1893 until the time of his death. He was married In 1892 to -Countess Margaret Hoyos of tbe HongarUn nebllity. and after the death of hla father he'KiLerited the title of prince. The oecensed had only one sister, who la tbe wife of Count von Itentxau. His brother William died in MOL Prince Herbert leaves fire- children, two girt* and three boy*.
