Meeeral of whom will probably die. Bunntni; on a roadbed In a supposedly hltth condition of maintenance and harluK about them every safeguard known to modern railroading, two trains on the Southern railway carrying heavy lists of passengers came together In a frightful head-on collision. This appalling loss of life resulted apparently from the disregarding of orders given to the two trains to moot at a station which has for a tong time been their regular meeting point. The trains were due to paaa at Hodges-Station, but collided about oue and a half miles west of that place, the westlKiund train running past the meeting point. Superintendent Loyall was In Chattanooga when the collision occurred and U en route to the wtWk on a special train. Every car In the east bound train was demolished except the sleeper. Delong Itlce of Nashville. Term., was riding In the Bleeper with his two sons, and all escaped Injury. Not one of the passengers on the westbound train was killed. A targe number were going from Knoxville to Newmarket to attend the funeral of W. R. King, a prominent oltlseii of that place. Jnmes King, one of the dead, was a brother of W. K. King. The death list as a result of the wreck will probably exceed seventy before tomorrow, as many of the Injured are In a serious condition, and more deaths will occur at the hospital here. There have been six deaths already at that Institution as the result of the collision, the last one occurring last night, when M. P. Gant, a prominent North, Carolinian, residing at Shelby, N. CL. passed away.

PARKER’S ACCEPTANCE. Democratlr Nomlaec's Formal Letter Hade Public. ESOPUS, X. Y., Sept. 27.^Judge Parker’s formal letter of acceptance of the Democratic nomination for the presidency Is given to the public this morning. In stating his position upon the Issues formulated in the platform of his party the nominee declares: That constitutionalism versus imperialism is the paramount question to he decided by the people. That the tariff should be reformed and revised by the friends of masses rather than the friends of Its beneficiaries. That official extravagance la official crime, meriting swift and certain punfshment. That flourishing the big stick over South American republics is un-Ameri-can and a long stride toward administrative tyranny at home. That the method of acquiring the Panama canal Is questionable. That he accepts the challenge of President Roosevelt In relation to executive pension order N9. 78, and that If bo shall be .elected he will revoke the order and endeavor to compass the end desired through legislation by con ifres*. Finally Judge Parker says: ■“The people must decide."
