COUNTY CLERKSHIP (COXTINCKU KBOM KIIIRT PAOK.I,
too short s time for s good man to hold the ofhee of copnty clerk because impending chsdgos made bad work of keeping straight records, and be said that be was extremely anxious, as .a patron of the office, to see Dr. Way reelected, and this can be said to be the aentiment of about all the people who have business at the county clerk's offlee Dr. Way has brought suit for |10,(W0 damages lor criminal libel against Messrs. Landis and Jefferson. The following letter throws much light upon the subject: Ocean Olty, N. J., Oct. 24, IWlH. Dr. Juhus Way, Cape May d H., N. J. Dear Bit:— I have read the article of C-K.Lan 'is in the Cape Way ( ounty Times, regarding the Swain Claim, ewdently wntien to injure you in the coming elecUon. I have too much confidence In the people of Sea Isle ( ity to think that they would be influenced by such an article, and I write this letter on behalf of the present owners of the Whale Beach tract to inform you that we do not blame yon in the least regarding your interest In the Swain Claim, but on the other hand we feel very much indebted to you for the interest yon took in helping to dear our title. The facts of the Whale Beach sale are simply these: The Landis Estate sold the land for a certain price dear of all incumbrance. After receiving a substantial payment down thev refused to straighten out the title They knew the Swain Claim and severs! others had never been bought by them, and that they never owned them. After a long delay in trying to make aexUement with the Landis Estate we were in a position where we either hsd to go into s suit with them or take what title they counted to give; and being anxious to get the matter dosed up, we dedded to suffer the injustice ana clear the title ourselves, which wf did, etilh your aetietanee. I feel very much surprised and provoked to know that such an artids should be written by a person knowing the facts of the matter as well as Mr. Landis doe*. Feeling confident that the artide will fall abort of the writer’s aim and wishing for your re-dection on November 8th by a hand sc me majority, I am, Very truly youra, Jos^J. Scull. The record of Jamas M. E. Hildreth, the Republican candidate for re-election to the Assembly, stands oat as one of tree representation to Cape May County in particular and In the Stale In generai. His work at Trenton last winter for bills which were of Interest to Capa May City and to the fishermen along the shores of the Delaware Bay were successful, and for this reason there la no doubt but that ba will be returned to tbc Assembly again with a very large majority.
