Home of h& friends still cling to the Idea that be will be made chancellor of tbe empire with his residence In tbe Winter palace, where, it la eatd. a suit of apartment* has already been prepared for him. On tbe otter band, many declare that his poUUcai career Is practically over and that bis reception at 8t Petersburg, while officially cordial, will mark the end of bis political ascendency. It Is said that tbe Rmnian consulntc at Cbefu has a Marconi appnrntu* with which It communicates nightly with Port Arthur. The apparatus Is placed on an island off Cbefn. A Shanghai report says that General Stoessel. at Port Arthur, ha* wired the Russian emperor and court recently: “I now bid you all goodby forever, fort Arthur Is my grave." It is believed here thst the second battle on the Rhakbe river will prove to be as much bigger and more serious than tbs first as ths first was more serious than the battle of Liaoyang. Merry Hallowe'en Party. One of the most pleasant evenings in the way of u Hallowe'en party was given at the borne of Mr. and Mr*. Samuel Hillman ou Broadway, Monday evening. The part y was com posed of fourteen ghosts, one witch snd one imp, and each one was destined their work to do, fortune telling was the first of the long routine, and a* the weird objects ap-i proached the tent in which the witch was quartered. Many strange stories regarding one’s future life was told. The room was lighted with pumpkins in which were placed candies, and autumn leaves decorated the wall*. As ihey sll sat around in their ghostlike appearance, am yen in their mantle of white, and not even making a sound, it seemed as tf they had come from some unknown region or suddenly risen from tbe dead. After tbe fortune telling, many other games suitable for tbe oo c&sion were indulged in, after which refreshments were served. Those present were:—The Misses Etta Taylor, Marion Nelson, Emma Conover, Marv Doughty, Lear* • onover, Ethel Btites, Irene Thomas.
