A Tokyo r»*|*ort of the capture of Wantal hid. a domluntlui; fort within two mile* of the railway tennlnua, show* that the Japanese are waking
rapid stride*.
The troopa of the mikado have tre-<|U«-ntly stolen Into-the uath-e town of
Tort Arthur after dark, hut l
were driven out at daylight with heavy loastv. The Japanese have four large forts facing the Uuashui works on Ulhlung inountaln and Slmnshu Uioun tain, where tliey are mounting naval
guns on stone foundations.
Mukden dispatches to Berlin state that the BussJjin commanders are preparing their men to hear of the full of
J*ort Arthur.
There Is considerable evidence to Indioate that the Japanese will make every effort to force the iiusalana out of Mukden not only for the moral effect on Europe, but u|h>u tbe phlnese aa well. Mukden Is extremely impure rant to them as winter quarters. Tbe Japanese continue to receive reenforeementis. and it Is believed by Kusslau military n>en that their advancing dependa only upon accumuhtfIng sufficient men. A special from Cbefu says that the doom of Port Arthur Is beyond question. lu fall Is simply awaiting the convenience of tbe Japanese army. The Information, the reliability of which cannot be questioned, has l»een received that the Japanese now occupy positions which place the east side of tbe town at their merry. Tbe last assault has gained for thorn IMKitions which insure their ability to enter the main forts whenever they are
ready..
A special semiofficial Mukden dispatch says that General Kuropatklu is devoting his attention chiefly to keeping the Japanese busy along the Hue of their fortifications below the Shakbe river. Tbe Russians apparently are enjoying some superiority In the matter of artillery, as many of the heavier field trains and mortar batteries are now arriving and being brought Into
cservlea.
The Russian and Japanese armies, extending from BeutsL.putze, east, to the Liao river, west, at places are almost within a stone's throw of each other. At Bentstaputze not more than 400 yards separate the advance posts, and at Slnchinpn, on the Shakhe river. Just west of tbe railway and fifteen miles south of Mnkden, the Japanese and Russians occupy the extreme ends of ^be same village. At Huangshantse the Russian center has thrown advance posts across the Shakbe river. It Is rumored, at Cbefu that the Russians hare abandoned all tbe forts to tbe east and north of Port Arthur. The garrison la said to have withdrawn to the strongly fortified Ldaotishun peninsula, which Admiral Togo la now shell-
ing.
Shanghai reports say that tbe beslegeaa have made considerable further procress; that several Russian counter attacks at Erhluugsbau were.repulsed with great loss to the defenders, who abandoned tbe main forts and outlying troika. Tbe Japanese are now halfway up tbe slopes of Erfaluugshan and Shan-
