That wa* when Mr. Hand In ueacriblng Cneaar Youug’a , Ufa called bint a man with tba blgtiaat aonae of honor, generoua and open bandod. Mr. Rand continued, “Caesar Yoiuu fell, where many a good man liaa fallen.'' ^ It wan then that a red fliwh mantled Nan Patterson's brow, and her eyes dropped for a moment. Mr. Rand. In the opinion of all present In the courtroom, delirered a masterly address which left not the*mlnutest detail undone. He stated emjihatically that be would-prore Caesar Young had uo motive for committing suicide, while he averred he would produce facta to prove that Nan Patterson desired the life of tbe man who had befriended her. He acknowledged that be had nothing bnt circumstantial etideuce to work upon. Mr. Rand's most impressive remark was when he said: "We have undispotable proof that Cne.tnr Young did not IdU himself. When the autopsy on hla body was performed tbe physicians were surprised to And that tbe bullet had gone transversely across his body from left to right and had lodged In his shoulder. Caeaar Young aat on the right aide of the cab when tbe shot waa bred, and bis body fell to tbe left and across tbe woman's knees." ^ J. Morgan Smith, tbe brotber-in-la< Of Nan Patterson, was directly accused by Mr. Rand of baring bought tba revolver which fired tbe shot that kilted Caeaar Young. Mr. Rand'a description of tbe life which Caesar Young and Nan Patterson ted together sounded like a romance from some tale of Action. "This la a tele of death ahd passion." was his apt description of all that had transpired. He told how Caesar Young ,had met tbe defendant on a train while on tbe way to teollfornia; how the woman had followed him from race trade to race track, "exhibiting the same trnlt ■.•' said Mr. Ua..d. ‘Va iiiry'j little iamb.’' He told of Caeaar Young’s efforts to get rid of the woman and of her per sleteney in following him wherever he went. Finally Mr. Rand said. “Caesar Ycmug determined to leave tbe wjiuan at all costa and prepared for a trip to Europe with his wife where be would be free, from Nan Patterson's attention*. "Thirteen boars before the shooting occurred." then said Mr. Rand, “tba murder was planned. It waa dans with deliberation and with premeditation and therefore constituted an act of murder'In tbe first degree. "Young never carried a revolver in bis life. When be left tbe boose of bis friend in West One Hundred and Fortieth street be told his wife be was going to get shaved and would also boy a bat.
