Aa soon na tin* legislature aettles down *o work It la expected that there will be a conference of the Republican feadera to couaider the aubject of equal taxation and to formulate a bill on tbe matter. Governor Murphy and Governor Elect gtokee are both considering the aubject. one for hla final measage and the other for hla inaugural address. Tbe Uejmbllcnn i»arty by Its platform favor* the policy of taxation of second clans railroad property at local rate*.
Taaattea Board'* Hr port.
The equal taxation commiaalou np pointed by Governor Murphy to torestigate the aubject la now preparing Ita report for tbe legislature. Former Governor Werta, one of tbe memben of tbe cumtniaalOD, la making a draft of the report, which will be submitted to tbe full body, but Just what Its fate will be ia not at all certain. There may be a minority report. Unices expectations are disappointed Messrs. Rlker. Black and Werta will take positive ground for reform In tbe railroad tax system, while Messrs. I^ntx and West are considered likely to favor the present Systran. There is little probability of the report being ready before the 1st of February. It la believed that whatever is said by Governor Elect Stokes in bis Inaugural address on equal taxation will guide the legislature, and therefore his address is looked forward to with great interest. The equal taxation subject it is almost certain, will be the moot important matter before
the legislature this winter.
It U probable that early to the Mon the bill for tbe abandonment of the Morris canal will make its appear ance. This la a measure of vast Interest to north Jersey. Tbe subject was presented at the dying hoars of the last legislature, but was not considered be-
fore final adjournment.
SeheeHMehen Waat Mere F»r. Tbe seboolteacberm of tbe state are ynsking preparations to Invade Trenton to persuade tbe lawmakers to enact some legislation which will give them an Increase of salary, and the firemen and national guardsmen, despite tbe rulings of tbe courts that tbe tax exemption law is unconstitutional, will make a determined effort to have passed « measure ^hlcb will give them tbe
old time tax exemption.
Tbe legislature this year may make -a more generous appropriation than ever for voting machines. N There was some opposition to the machines at tbe last election to several sections of tbe -state, and a proposition to increase their number Is likely to precipitate a contest. It is generally believed that tbe legislature will decide to I vy more ma-

There will also be a provision to tbe bill for proper examiners to examine the election officers and determine tfelr fitAssembly men Ralph Maine of Merest and C. W. Mable of Ucrgeu are lioth expected to present bllla for the abol Ishment of capital punishment. On good authority It ia stated’that the state board of health will endeavo. to obtain tbe passage of a measure taking from those accused of sclllug adulterated milk tbs right of a trial by Jury. This will be to tbe form of-an amendment to the present law. to which tbe clause providing for the trial by Jury was Inserted as a compromise. Tbe state board claims that tbe Juries which have acquitted so many milk dealer* in Jersey City have plated a premium upon the sale of adul tented milk, and It will be ImjKMslblc to suppress the traffic unless tbe trial by Jury clause is stricken from the law.
