BOSTON. Fab. 7.—Nearly all of the smaller porta on the New England coast between Pataaroaquoddy and Narragansett bays are closad tightly with lea, while the larger harbors, including Boston, Portsmouth, N. H.; Portland. Us., and l*rorlden(W. R. L. are filled with huge floating cakes that impeded and endangered navigation. The southern storm and rising temperature that prevailed during the day caused a temporary lifting of the Ice embargo at a few of the blockaded porta, but last night the wind changed to the northwest, a cold wave approached and it was expected that today would bring about conditions even worse than those that have existed for the past three days. A notable feature of the ice blockade waa the experience of the government lightship No. <W In attempting to force a passage from New Bedford to her station on Nantucket shoals The vessel stuck fast In the Ice and wa* forced ashore near Dumpling rocks. In Buszarda bay. An attempt la being made to float and free her. Not for nearly sixty years have such conditions been known In Buzzards bay, which is frozen from aide to side and almost the entire distance from New Bedford to the Elizabeth Islands. At Nantucket the residents of the Island believed when the temperature rose that the end of their Isolation waa at hand, but last night the temperature fell and the blockade waa strengthened. Part of the ice in Vineyard Haven harbor has moved out, carrying with It two schooners and eight barges. The schooners were forced ashore, but the tngs rescued the barges. Navigation In Boston harbor 1" Impeded by floating Ice. though the conditions here are less serious than elsewhere. Practically all the Maine porta east of Portland are- Icebound, and shipping Is at a standstill. A general fall of snow In Iowa. MlsHotiri. northern Indiana and northern Illinois and Michigan has been heavy.
