NEW YORK. May 2.—"This case U one of deliberate murder or suicide. There can be no manslaughter about It. There mould be no compromise verdict. She is either guilty of murder In tbe first degree or qpt at all.” With these significant wcrda Abraham Levyf counsel for Nan Patterson, brought to a close bis five hour argument In defense of tbe former “Flora flora” chorus girl, charged with tbe murder of Caesar Toung. Poring tbe long argument Miss PatttfHp flCfifl tbe fxxrj unflinchingly and watened eVery movement of tbe men who are to determine her fate. Mf. Levy reviewed all the testimony In dettyl and-flscJkred not a word bad been Introdnced which showed any purpose on the part of Miss Patterson or ber brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and lira. J. Morgan Smith, to threaten the life of Caesar Young. Tbe suicide theory was strongly emphasized by Mr. Levy, who contended that the powder stains on Young's Angers proved be bad shot himself. Mr. Levy scouted the Idea that a girl would be able to make such an assault on a trained athlete like Young. He also ridiculed the idea that Mkss Patterson should have chosen a crowded public street as a place for murder when she bad so many opportunities to attack Young where there would have been little danger of detection. Assistant District Attorney Baud will follow for the people, and it la probabia the case will go to tbe Jury today.
