It may seem almost Incomprehensible to tbe areraae reader should a statement be made that Mr. Burbauk baa at this present moment more than 10.000 varieties of potatoes with which be la experimenting. Yet aocb Is tbe fact- And out of those thousands of all sorts and conditions of tubers are to come the newer and better varieties that may completely revolutionise tbe potato world. Another wonderful creation and production of Burbank which will come In under the head of the potato experiments, bat Is even more wonderful. Is this: Burbank has produced t “potato fruit" Briefly summarised, the ^evolution Is a matter of planting a tuber and gathering from the potato vine a luscious white fruit one that la delightfully palatable and makes excellent preserve. There are people In Santa Boaa who have eaten the potato fruit and Its preserve and are delighted with It • Mr. Burbank has named the potato 'fruit “pomato." When compared with • tomato the pomato Is smaller In sise and Its meat Is white Instead of red. It is .higher flavored. In other words. Its jfcvor Is that of s fruit rather than a Vegetable. Burbank speaks of the creation of tbe pomato As resulting from tbe turning of tbe plant life In an opposite direction. "Instead of cultlrating tubers we now cultivate fruit, and tbe tubers are of secondary consideration," be says, “the fruit on tbe vine being tbe main Object." Tbe pomato has not been sent out ss yet It must be more nearly perfect before it leave* its creator’s bands for tbe world st large. But to return to the potato experiments. Chief among the experimental work with tbe tubers was and U tbe - crossing of the Solan am rommersonl. a wild species of the potato which grows on tbe Mercedes river. In South America, with tbe common potato. Tbe aforenamed potato was discovered some ten years ago, and specimens were taken to Parts, and for jdmoet a decade Dr. Heck el studied and tried to hybridise It Finally be sent Lather Bar ♦wnfc a single eye. and twelve months after tbe i scientist com maoced bis experiment* be had secured 120 hybrid seedlings from It Burbank la also experimenting with another new species of tuber—the 80-

inspection, testing and selection. Mr. Burbauk recently commenced tbe planting of tbe 10,000 varieties on bis experimental grounds. Tbe potatoes are of all kinds and shapes, some round, some square, some long, some short, of all colors of tbe Vs In bow. There are pure white tubers and black ones. Pink. red. crimson, purple,.yellow, are among the colors of tbe potatoes that are being planted. Wbcn tbe harvest time comes In tbe fall possibly all bpt a hundred varieties out of tbe 10,000 may be rejected, and tbe following year probably this number will be reduced two-thirds, and so ob until perfection Is attained. It will take two or three years at least Mr. Barbunk said, to produce the potato, as all the varieties must be put through tbe testing process.
