CHICAGO, June U.—President C. P. Shea of the Teamsters' union has been arrested and taken to Jail. Rioting. In which shots were fired by the police, occurred In an alley at Uoyne and Cornell avenues. The policemen were guarding a wagon belonging to the Arthur Gourley Lumber company. While Hie teamster was unloading the lumlier a crowd threw missiles. union teamsters in the meantime driving their wagons to the ends of the alley and forming a blockade. A beery plank and a Urge piece of tiling were thrown from the roar window of a buUdlug near the alley, narrowly missing a policeman. Tt- officer fired toward the window, but the bullets went wide. Ue-entorcemenU arrived, and the nonunion teamster was enabled to proceed to the lumber yard after having unloaded the vehicle. In addition t* making the charge of criminal libel, asks for damages to the amount of $25,000 from Shea. The suit U based on Interviews given out by President Shea to the newspapers and on statements be la said to have made to the effect that be bad been offered $10,000 by Mr. Thorne to call a strike against Sears, Roebuck A Co., which U a large bouse In the same line of business as Montgomery Ward A Co. Mr. Thorne denies all of the alleged statements of President Shea. 'The employers have again blocked a settlement," said President Shea. •Their objection to the men wearing union buttons and a refusal to agree not to discriminate against the strikers la all that prevents the calling off of the strike."
