This was the fourth attempt of the *0 called difluiplln faction to bring before the voter* a proposition to bond the town for f 172.300 to discharge the existing debt, a measure which had been Introduced by Senator CbampQn at the last session of the general assembly and which became law. Three meetings bad been called on the same question In the last_ two month*, but before any eouchwlon could be reached conditions develoi*ed which nearly resulted In pitched bat ties betw.-on the two factions. The feeling between the warring elements is at fever beat and e*i«ecially so among the Rose party. The meeting hod been called for 2 o’clock at the town holt An honr earlier some 200 of the Rose supporter* gathered near the building*, armed with slung* hot*, blackjacks, stones and other Implements of primitive warfare. They had been waiting In battle array about half an hour when the twelve special constables from Providence in uniform put In an appearance, marching in military fashion to the town hall, with Lieutenant James P. Scott in command. I.leutenant Scott had the key to the building, but just as the constable* were about to enter the Rose follower* advanced to the attack. shouting and yelling defiance and derision and darling missiles at the constable. a-^'V ^ t*** *alangbt the officer* proa v>° A _vI the building, but 1^**. Jp .gained an trafiev _ v^».^rt6cked and chit the constables out again, who retreated with braised bodies, torn uniforms and smashed helm etc. The Rose element then turned their attention to the wrecking of the interior of the ball, and twenty minutes later, when they had finished the destructive work, not a window pane was left Intact, while the furniture and fittings were thoroughly demolished. It'is said that the CtiampUn leaders will moke still another effort to obtain a rots on the bond tasns.
