development of the hlghapesd auto mot-lic These cars, literally locomotives. are sent across country at rail. rqpd rates and over steam-road tracks without heed for the common rules of caution. Owing to the failure of the stales to make laws requiring the Sinking or raising of the Hoes over country roads, as well as city streets, there are thousands of places In the thickly settled parts of the country where human life Is exposed to danger at all hours. This danger Is especially great after dark, in the wooded pans of the rural districts In many places the railroad tracks are invisible ten feet from the Oral rail, save for the Immediate spare of the crossing. In consequence, chauffeurs, driving their own machines pell-mell over the roads, run upon the lines only to be crashed by trains the approach of which they have not heard or seen. The antomobllists of the country are rolled upon by the "common people" for aid In the establishment of a system of good roads, says the Washington Star. They have not accomplished much to this end thus far. Here, however. lies an opportunity for them contribute to the public welfare while they are conserving their own Interests and protecting their Uvea they would organise for the purpose of forcing state legislation *or abolition of all such death traps throughout the eastern slates they would go far toward overcoming the public prejudice against their i aroused by-the wild actions of SOI Jhelr number In city streets and coi roads. A systematic demand fot the Abolition of the rural grade crossings would, of course, be strenuously opposed by the transportation lines The expenditure Involved would be very heavy. But the time Is coming when the railroads and the towns counties and tarts must make this concesslox to the public security. If the wort were undertaken now on a gradually Increasing scale the cost might be so distributed that the burden would not fall prohibitively upon any corporation or community. The expense of changing the grade of a country road Is by •o means an heavy as that of raising or lowering a city street, and. de the groat.number of dangerous places to be this reformed, the project is ew tlrciyi.feaslble
The reason governments should leave as wide a field as possible for the operation of private enterprise, says the Boston TrascrlpL Is that government opera lions perpetually lack the one test which Is the mainspring of all successful private business life: "Does It pay?’ As soon as private business concerns find that they are doing something which Is not worth while, they shut It off. They may make mistakes In this line, but their attempt la to ragulate the life of business projects and enterprises by their return, by whether they pay or noC In the government failures and ■ucceeses Sourish side by side. There Is no motive for cutting off the useless, because It* cost does not come out of anybody Id particular, and the beneficiaries of any appropriation cling to It llkv grim death
■ The Emporia boys who. left for the harrsat fields this morning, reports the bnpuela (Kan.) A rather fnteresTtng tendency of the times Is emphasized In the amount of space which a number of newspapers are devoting to genealogical articles In other words, says the Washington Post, we are beginning to manifest some concern regarding our ancestors. The creation of family trees has never been a popular Industry In this country. It was discouraged by our ancestors. who felt that they had enough to do In subduing tyranny, fighting the Indians and conquering the wilderness, without expending time and thought upon pedigrees and heraldic devices. They were a sturdy and practical people, those ancestors of ours, and very democratic In all tendencies. They Judged a mai what be said and did, and not by what his father bad said and done before
