THE OCEAN BOULEVARD A Subject Which Is Re*ll> Worth Consideration WOULD BUILD UP PROPERTY Boulevard Would Friend From Atlantic Highland, to Atlantic dty
There U something no faarinating about the idea of an ocean boulevard tending* all along the coast from Atlantic Highlands to Cape May, thal the shore paper* are excusable for agitating the subject for each soercssive ocean now has has its own boulevard, a broad, graded, and in some place* paved highway, .kirliog me beach, beyond which no stores, dwellings, hotels or other building* are allowed to belotmled. pier* sod pavilions excepted. - At some time In the future there separate and distinct Iwulerard. are icslaioed to become connected sod to form one oootiauotis route, for the hole shore front is being built up and ccupied more rapidly than any other strip of land in thh country, and iu tbe world. Nevertheless the progreea is not rapid enough to eat many people, and some obstacles mre in the way of such a continuous, improved shore road as in
contemplated.
Tbe agitation this year, as renewed by the Asbury Park Press, is in tbe form of a project to be undertaken by the State Iu a word, the legislature ia to bcinvoked to assume the aggressive (natter, to overcome all tbe obstacle* which have hitherto balked one or more boulevard •ehetnev, and to build and in part pay for about 100 miles of telford road; fifty mile, in tbe rear future, carrying tbe pro pored boulevard from Sea bright down tbe coast to Atlantic City, and, later, extending it to Cape Hay on tbe south, and poaaibiy to tbe Highland, and Amboy on tbe north. Those who have for manr year* past watched the eflurU of Asbury Park to get an ocean boulevard through Ocean Grove, and tbe thus fai successful ppogition of the latter place to tbe proponed innovation, will see at once why the Park papera are so anxious to nave the State undertake Ibis great improvement. New Jersey coold earilr do what Asbury Part has failed to do. it could also overcome any other obstructions or opposition all along the for what tbe State undertook would undoubtedly be carried into effect. Further than this, tbe boulevard if built the State and under tbe supervision of tbe road department, would be a* straight a* possible; would be of uniform width throughout; would be graded and pared up tc the latest standard requirement* and would be the most famous and most beautiful road in the whole United States. What a perfect pared lee for automobile, this ocean boalevard would be, the moment it was pc ted to the riding public. Tbe subject is certally really worth consideration. There may be. and doubtless are. selfish motive, behind its annual advocacy, ft would unquestionably build op a appreciate the value of every foot of Mod along the coast. It would give a groat impetus to improveits of every legitimate character along the whole line. But tbe Slate would have to appropriate more than for road*, and tbe counties treveraed would have to assume large bondepdedta to pay for thesr respective ' ■hares of the coat. In time tbe appreciation of the shore property woud more than pay for tbe boulevard, bat for a while tbe taxes it have to bo higher than tha naxii permitted by the HOfery am.
It bow is. and If aa ocean boulevard U to ba bodt at at all. UUs is the to build It. Along with tbe not a part of
