THURSDAY. FEBRUARY 22. 1906.
NewJereey'a V. 8. Eeantora From The Camden Poat-Teletram II wr are io believe aome of the outside newspaper* the State of New Jersey iv in the throes of an excitement over the election of a United State* Senator to succeed Mr. Dryden, whose term does not expire until March 4, 1907. One of these papers devotes considerable space to showing that Governor Stokes is not debarred by any constitutional provision from being a caodi date. The argument is wasted, as the possibility of his vacating the Executive chair is founded upon nothing more tangible than silly newspsper gossip and the fact that he came near defeating Mr. Dryden through an agreement whereby be fortunately received the votes of all the other South Jersey candidates for a single ballot. On the next ballot, if one bad been taken, hi* name was to be dropped for that of Kami or Gardner. It was this agreement that gave the Governor his increased v -te and conaiderable political prestige, hot nowhere in South Jersey it Is used or suggested to antagonise Mr. Dryden’s re-election to a deserved full term by bringing forward Stokea, Baird, Gardner or any other Sooth Jersey candidate next ynsr. Unless the law should be declared legal to elect Assemblymen by districts, it la not probable Hodaon County will wield any inflnence In the Republican joint caucus next year, nor, if it should pro re otherwise, that it will be against Mr. Dryden, who has been a laithfnl, intelligent and iuflnential representative from New-Jersey Hr the Senate, hi# courtesy to all, either personally or by communication, being proverbial and unbounded; and. so far as party precedent is concerned in the re-election of United States Senators, it is unbroken in his favor. Not fbr Party Determination Senator Patterson is absolutely right when he aays that a Senator's vote on the ratification of a treaty D property his own, and ought not to be dictated by any combination of Senators. If it cannot be directed by the Legislature of the Senator's own State, as is known to be the case, it surely cannot properly be controlled by a party caucus. The Senate will do well to adopt Mr Patterson's resolution establishing this principle. It does not matter what party is concerned, nor in what party' intereat it may sometime he to attempt a aimiliar direction on its members' conscience*- Our relations with foreign countries ought to transcend questions of party politic*, ajd be voted on by Senators upon their conscience as citixens and their sentiment as patriots. Bat apparently the Democratic party In the Senate is so corutilated thi would rather take the narrow and titan position with Tillman and Bailey than the broad and patriotic one with Patterson and McEnery.
No Chance For Contest* From the Caaitea Courier. A bill has been introduced in the New York Assembly providing for the use of voting machines in New York City, which, it is thought, will render unnecessary the consideration of the corrupt practices tails now pending. The Republican organization ol New York county has declared in laror of the voting machines, believing their would prove a remedy for corruption and illegal voting, and Governor Big gins D reported to be of the same belief. With an honest registration the voting machine will record an honest

HER SECOND VALENTINE By WRIGHT A. PATTERSON
8L Valentine * day, but It brought no expectant flush to the cheeks of Jennie Morris. Rather ahe was Jennie Morris M year* ago, now bar neighbora knew her as plats Jane MoRIx Twenty years ago the had been i blithesome girl just budding Into mag nlficent womanhood, the ball# and pet of the village, and people generally had voted Henry Fraser the meet fortunate of young men when It was said that Jennie Morrie was to be hie wife. Twenty years ago. How long the time seemed to the woman living alone now In the village where once ■he had reigned as queen. Parents gone to their long rest ten years before, leaving her Just a sufficient competence to keep hunger from the door. She was still Idolised by the village folk, for she played the role of Good Samaritan In every needing home. Every day In the yeer eave one she was at the beck and call of any who needed her help. But 8L Valentine's day was her own; her own to be spent i with the greatest sorrow of her life, for It was on St Valentine'* day }0 years before that she had driven Henry Fraaer from her by a bit of foolish pettiness. For *M «ays of each year ahe cast this sorrow from her that ahe might be of help to others, hut «o this one day ahe bronght It all back to her only that ah* might cherish the love ah* had spurned so foolishly. When the remains at bar simple broaktast had been cleared away aba . to the drawer of the Utile secretary and took from it~tBe mementoes of her courtship; of the happy days i she was the affianced bride of Henry Fraser. Among them was the golden circle he bad placed upon her finger when sue had said “yea" to hla wooing. She had never returned !L for yeajs after ahe had driven him from her the did not know where end It. Then when ahe saw hla B mentioned as a prominent bustman of an eastern city the little circlet with Its modest setting had become too dear to her to be parted with, id besides he had probably forgot-
