struct form, hut the question of the Infinity of world* and their distribution In the Infinity of space lies more closely within the scope of human Intellect, for we have inahv matertul facta and calculations to go upon In discovering the probable answer, to this meet fasrinatjng question. Only as far back as the seventkeuth century astronomers placed the number of stars Id the universe as a little over l.uou. hot this was absurd, as the real number visible to tbe naked eye Is about 7.0UO. and perhaps treble that number can be seen by persons with sxceptlooally good eyesight. When the heavens, however, are examined through a telescope tbe number of risible stars Is enormously Increased. In fact. It has been calculated that the moat poweiful reveals as many as lUXOOO-OOO: Tet what Is that vast number compared with Infinity? It cannot even be likened to a grain of sand on the seashore, and yef If we think tbe matter out carefully we shall ace that the number of vlsl 'le stars cannot really be Infinite, for If they were the h-tivens would be a complete blase of light. This, of course, we know Is far from being tbe case, and Indeed there cannot be any doubt that In certain liana of the heavrus at least tbe number of visible stars la already known, for even with tbe very strongest trlescoi cs there are blank space* which are absolutely devoid of stars below a certain magnitude or even the veriest traie of nebulous light. ‘Shese spaces are knosu to astronomers by tbe name of "coal sacks." Tb^f contain no atars fainter than the twelfth magnitude and. lu fact appear to mark thorn- pans of tbe universe which are comparatively thin. On the ether bund. In other [isns of tbe heavens we hare not by any means reached the limit of telescopic reaolrabUity. II Is curious, though, that these Intensely dark "boles” In tbe bright empyrean are mostly to be found In those parts of the heavens where most stars al-ound. not. bly In Ibe Milky Way. These remarkable blank spots have been a favorite theme of discussion and argument among all astronomers, for whaierer the real shape or distribution of that universe may be. they [mint to tbe almost certain Infe that In a particular direction at there Is an actual limit to the number of atars. and If there la a limit In direction we hare every right to suppose that such la the case in and that we have only to s telescopes strung enough to those pa ns which are still unresolrable to discover that a point esc readied when all the stars of the verse are unfolded to our gaxe. If. now. we admit that the number of risible stars is limited, tbe next question to be asked la What Is the order or shape of tbelr distribution’ Various astronomers bare bad various theories about this matter. Henebe! was Inclined to think that tbe visible universe was In tbe shape of a disk, thoorii his views In this direction wi considerably modified during tbe later part of his life. Struve considered that tbe universe was In the abgpe of a disk of limited thick nets, but Injutta. length, a theory which la bard to support, as. unless tbe ultimate extinction Of light In n-are is believed in. that part of tbe besvens which lay toward tbe plane of tha <Mak would necessarily shine with the brightness of tha it Proctor, though finding H Bag neat Ml define any particular shape for tbe visible universe, as s whole, was of tbe opinion that the brightest part of Itnaraely. tbe Milky Wiy-wai Is the form of a spiral. This Utter theory, however, has many objections to contend with, other astronomers hare had different theories on but all. or nearly all. appear to an ultimate limit to the size of tb Me universe, or. In other words, believe, that tbe galaxy of worlds which si round us form. In fact, but an Islet the vast Infinity of spate. It would appear at first sight a any attempt to aoiva-the question of tbe existence of external gaUxles and tbelr dlstaae* was absolutely fatlle. yet such U not the case.
