Bills Introduced In Both Houaei Anfloigaratte BUI and Measure For Local Option Prase a ted

Trenton. Fob. 21.—Tae legislature this week had two bu«y aeasluns Monday night and Tuesday, after which the members went

public and private. Liquer Legislation.

Tbe proposed liquor legislation occupied most of tbe attention of tbe legislators. Assemblyudb Bock of Cumber land county presented a local option bm at tbe Instance of tbo AutUntoon League of New Jersey. It is practically the same measure as that Introduced last winter, wttb the exception that It goes a little further and permits .unctpalltles to vote by wards ou tbe question of having or not baring saloons. It la same whit of a coincidence that both local option bills should come from Cumberland county and that both should be fathered by Assemblyman Buck. Assemblyman Miller, Mr. Buck's associate last winter, was to bare been sponsor for tbe last bill, bnt be was kept ■t home by tbe death of bis wife a< tbe time, and Mr. Buck took bis place Hut measure failed of pa wig*, ana nr* it likely to meet tbe same fate. Tbe Democratic majority of tbhouse la opposed to tempAanrc reforn of any kind nod baa the rotes to de fienLJftts measure. Even She Republic ads ore somewhat fearful of an rallies:

While tbe Democrats.may be saU' tu b opposed to all temperance reform, they seem altogether at sea as to Just wbat stand to taka. It la reported Leader Kicnert has been severely taken to task by some of bis colleagues 'so ao arbitrarily refused to grant tbe tamperance people a bearli^g on tbo bllla now before tbe house. Another. Democrat who la opposed to liquor legislation this winter Is Mr. Morris of ffuaoex. He has ex|iressed himself as opposed to any change In the btahopk' law, and if be stands out tn this position tbe Democrats will be amend the present law unlem with tbe eld of Republican rotes, which they ere not likely to got The Democrats In Joint conference lets Tuesday afternoon lIsteAd to the 8U*er bill, which U to modify the bishops' Uw, but there wm no a tree ment, the matter of caocu# going over Monday evening. There ore Democrats of tbe honae who say that not be any caucus. Mr. Mor rts says that be will hot rots for thr In Its present alia pc. Tbe Kllxer ndment compels women to drink st the bar, as men, if they want to an tar saloons for tbe purpose of drinking; the mandatory feature of tbe screes sections is modified by allowing boards of excise and common pleas Judges discretion wbother or not they shall «ns down; tbe landlord Is to Ueved of Joint liability witb tbe tenant by a section which modifies'the blab ops' Uw by saying that Tbs landlord shell not be lUble if tbaiUegal acts oi tbe tenant are unknown to him."
