What is Going on In the Cottage Colony—Many Interesting Chatterings
The cottager* preaented the following letter lo City Council at lu meeting on Tuesday evening: August 6, 1907. To the honorable Council of Uie City of Cape May. , Gentlemen;— We come before you this evening a* Property Owners, Tax Hearer* and as members of the Property Owners Protective Association of Cape May, with the view of calling lo your attention and asking for your immediate consideration of a condition that at present exists which we consider is not only a dl*cradii to the city of Cape May but reached the point that we fear is oecomlng dangerous lo the health ot die occupant* of the collage* in the lo eallty where this condition exists. allude to the oonslani overflow o. certain properties by reason of improper drainage. The organization of the Property Owners Protective Association was for the express purpune ol taking such action a* L couriered it lo remedy this evil, and we an acre this evening for the purpose o. tint asking what the proper officials o. (he pity of Cape May can do for us. At the first meeting of this organization trot evening, which w as held at the Ohalfont Hotel, your city solicitor endeavored to explain that he did not consider that tbe city was at fault, ami that the only red re* that the Property Owners who were being damaged by n of the flood of their variour properties waa against the Robb Ealau owing lo the tact of their filling up o. this tract, and that the dty council had notified those In charge of the estate of the difficulty, and that up to
done in the way of remedying this evil. Now we beg to say that we do noi agree with the statements made by your solicitor, from what we leant th. difficulty Is due to the filling up of th< sewers that drain this portion of th> Island by sand and mud and no doub. tales from the material that ha> pumped into this tract. Now as the sewers of this city are entirely under the Jurisdiction of the city council, it behooves this body to aee that this i> corrected either by compelling Uu partiaa who have caused this condition and If not successful it falls upon ibt city themselves to do ao. The tax that you exact from your Property Ow ners la supposed to be used for this purpose and if they are deprived of the convenience* such as proper sewerage and drainage, we have a right to protest and aak for Ihrae enienccs that we are supposed to be paying for. There Is no denying the fact that any property owner ha* the right lo fill up his property that be consider* below grade, and that hi* neighbor can have no just cause foi plaint, but if In doing so he should by any reason cause an obstruction to ewer system and by ao doing deprive his neighbor from their use of the sewers or drainage the proper place to make complaint and whose duty is e that this is corrected is the city dl. We trust, therefore, gentlemen, that there will be no farther delay and that every effort be made to bring about a remedy of this evil which has now reached the danger
point.
