tifly trout per day. The first were very plentiful in the south fork of ihe Keiu River, w hich runs through the Kenshaw meadows. We had no

trouble in catching the limit in short time. We used ariiltei with reel and pole, and hail sport. These trout are the t fish that swim. You never ea thing liner than Umsw mountain trout. We next made for Little Whitne. 1 meadows where we were positive Wi would gel a couple of deer aljeasi, am

possibly a couple a bear. We had dlsiHsrovered on lop of a big mountain several meadows, lots of water and u •mall but beautiful lake. Saw m> sign of a human fool; the last place you would dream to find a meadow ,

but it proved lo be the mwt likely ill

the mountains to our notion for no

bear or deer. We made Little Whitney

early in Ihe afternoon, cooked supper,

;ook our riflea and made for the top ol ihis mountain so as lo be there for the night's gunning. Had not anymore than reached the top when we saw

fresh deer tracks, and this of course added much lo the feeling that we surely would capture a couple of deer.

We hid ourselves pretty well and

sat down to wait and w atch. There

was a small pool of water near where

1 down,

t to i

9 if I

could see any tracks where deer had tieeu lo get w ater, and my eyes almost bulged out when 1 looked around the edge and saw tracks galore. So I antlered a bit further In the direction these tracks had gone; had not gone far when I came to a beautiful little meadow and thought it a pretty fine place for a deer, so I Uploed in behind some small pine trees, thinking thi would surely be the place to get a shot: had just got hid behind the bushe hen I beard twigs breaking anil rocks falling, and I knew- this was too much noise for a deer, and I said lo lyself, “here is where 1 capture Mr. ear.” X waited several minutes but could not hear a sound nor could I set a living thing but mosquitoes. I had this animal, w-halever It might be. was surely coming my way, but felt I had walled long enough, so went back to tell Fred about these meadows and the noise, and thought he had better come over to the meadow, as il was large enough for both of us to gun and lielter place than he had. To make long story short, we heard no more otse, and darkness had long sinct shut in on (is and we had a pretty iugh track to go to make camp, so e started for camp assuring each other we would surely get the game in the morning. We got up about three o'clock next morning and started foi the lop of the mountain and reached there long before daybreak. A little ahead of my story: Before leaving that night we found four or live mead even better than the first, and a beautiful lake with green grass all around. Just the finest place in tht world for a deer, and lols of deer signs. Fred had a position where he gunned long narrow meadow and this lake and I bad a position where I could gun three small meadows. We wailed vith the patience of Job, but no living thing could be seen; then we concluded to move around, both staying together so as not to shoot each other. We went to where I heard the noise the night before. Some great large bear tracks, too large for a black bear— it must have been a cinnamon, hunters told us it was certainly a big animal. We followed his tracks all over everywhere but could not find him, and we gave up the hunt. We decided lo start for Big Kem River. When we came to talk with old hunters they told us we should have stayed there all night as it was moonlight. Bean and deer do their feeding by moonlight when they and when it is lime to gun they are

safely hid.

Our return trip was no more succ:ssful than going over in the hunting line. We met the Ulmer's with whom we are living at Tuns ton Meadows. This ended our cooking, as they took in under their wing and had us join the camp. So we put what probfions we had with theirs and we had jolly good time. We left Tuns ton Meadows on Sarurday for Toast Meadows and Toast Meadows for Doyle and Doyle on Monday for Porterville, arriving here safe and sound Monday evening about 8 o'clock. Well, I have told you trip from start to finish and think you have enough to last you for a month. So will not attempt lo give you any further news at this writing. If there D anything you want to know about the trip, let me know, and I will try and answer your questions.

Love lo all.
