LENT
From Parish Leaflet, of Church of the Advent: Once more the season of Lent returns and bids us to bend every energy of the spiritual nature to lift the soul to a higher plane of life, to richer experiences, to nobler deeds, to firmer faith, to deepe. consecration and labor and prayer? more abundant- And as it returns it asks us to answer the call with all the earnestness of sincere souls striving after righteousness and true holiness. If then we all enter Upon the observarce of such a s son as though it were the last shall have here on earth, we shall take hold of its duties and pri< leges with real, honest endeavt and make of it a season of worth, glowing with reality, filled with real and the energy which accompanies the determination to quer the wrong things in life, and to live as God would have us live. There should be no half-hearted-ness, but ever the faithful use of every means that shall ennoble and enrich our souls. What shall we do then, thi: bent ? The question that you navi undoubtedly asked yourself again and again in the Lents that have passed! One thing at a time is s> good rule; as an answer—find out what one thing your soul needs, and then bend yonr # efforts in that direction. Every sonl has some need. Every person living has some one besetting sin. What that is you and God alone may know. Whatever it is, it may be the chief thing that consciously or ugponsciously is holding yon back and preventing you from givivg the noblest and the best that is in you. Lent comes to help you to see what is that one special sin, and to tell yon how to conqnor it. Again; as each Lent returns bringing with it the increased her of sen-ices for worship, along with its other uses and advantages, it is well to think what worship really is strangers to the church's ways sometimes say that they cannot understand why the people in the services are constantly changing their position, sometimts standing, sometimes kneeling, and then sitting. Bnt think what worship really is, that it is paying honor worthy of the object worshipped, and that Divine worship is honoring God. In the relations between man and man, the body always used to express honor, h one for example would think of entering a house to greet or address the host or hi&tcss. and not stand to do so- No committee having an earnest appeal to make to any earthly ruler or sovereign, would think of entering his presence, and iu a sitting posture present their Appeal; they would stand. And so as regards the worship of the Church to God, in the sitting and standing and the kneeling, there a purpose in it, there is a reason for it. it boners God in each particu'ar way, linking reverence with worship, making eacn worshipper an active participant rather than a passive one, and helping each one t > feel a personal contact with things Divine.
