Thc New Columbia was built of brick on Jackson street, bccupying the block in which six of the burned hotels stood. Cottages have gradually taken (he places of the ruins, and Cape May has not to-datf those large hostclries, but tlie more modem house; are of the smaller class. Nearly thirty eoltage* were burned, whose places were token inside of. three years bv fortv-six new ones. — The fire department of Cape May is, without doubt, the best and most finely equipped of any town with the same population in the Middle Atlantic States, and probably the best arid most effective of any seaside resort on the Atlantic .coast. It was 'reorganized in January, 1879, and now lias-a membership of forty-two, being governed by a chief, assistant chief and three foremen. It is purely volunteer, excepting the two engineers and driver, who arc salaried by the city, and two of whom are supposed to be at the engine house, comer Franklin and Washington streets, all the time. The apparatus consists of two SHsby fire steamers, one of the second and one of the fourth size. The second size steamer has forced a stream to a perpendicular height of 290 feet, and four streams .over 100 feet high, while the fourth sized steamer is capable of throwing streams according to its size. So well is the department arranged that in four minutes and fifteen seconds time the engines can leave the house and a hook and ladder ymek make up the balance of the equipment. For cases of;emergency 2500 feet of the best cotton hose lie on the shelves or hose racks for immediate use. Two hose carriages, which will cany 1500 feet of hose, and have a stream playing on the fire, there being fire hydrants on every comer and at such other convenient places as are found needful Trained horses draw the steamers to and from the fires. ^
