Thla christened Cape May Court House ai4 was made the county seat In 1744.Tbe first Baptist Church was built In 1711 when the town had a population of less than 200 souls. Only two years later a mysterious epidemic carried off forty of them, and their bodies were the first to be Interred In thU now famous cemetery. Preached By Hour-Glai In those days religious services were conducted in a most Puritanlca 1 manner. The bouse of God was plainly built, -with no means of warmt and the only light at evening meeting was provided by candles. At nine o'clock on a Sunday morn the shipers were summoned by a drum, tbe blowing of a conch-shell or hr the town crier. Deacons and elders sal on a little platform below the pulplL facing the congregation. After long preliminary services for prayer, pounding of the chapter for the day and psalm singing, the pastor turned his bhur glass and usually finished his discourse as the last grains Tbe attention of visitors Is ooce attracted by a huge oak tree at one fide of tbe cemetery, whose heighth and girth attest that It ' a sturdy sappllng when the first lerments were msde there. Most pathetic of all are two little crave* which are not In the cemetery proper, but are At the side of the main street, where It extends out In.o the sparsely settled district adja--ent to the county seat. At tbe edge jf a deserted farm, next to a swamp which reminds one of the primeval forest, is tbe place of "Tbe Lonely Grave*." They lie about |lfteen or twenty feet from the roadside, and anyone who, having heard of them, wishes to visit tbe sacred spot, most get a native as guide. Ancient trece, overhung with Interlacing vines, arch over and crowd closely about tbe tiny mounds, and a dimness as of twilight prevails In the little space. Tbe passage of a century has almost obiIberated tbe inscription on the crumbling headstones. After clearing away the Intruding ferns and brambles, the visitor of Investigative bent can disclpber a partially effaced record Indicating a aad story of two young lives cut short.
