«“In either 1845 or 184G, Henry Clay became embarrassed to snch an extent that he had to mortgage Aebiand. In the mean time, a movement bad been started in Ncw-Orle&ns by some of Mr. Clay’s friends, to pay bis debts aad relieve him from his embarrassments, and Mr. A. II. Trotter, tbe agent of tbe Nolherc Bank in NewOrleans, was sent East to confer with Mr. Clay's friends. Tbe consequence was that about $50,000 was subscribed, and the Hon. William Pennington was sent to Kentucky -with the money, and reached Lexington unknown to ecarcely any person. He walked into the Nothrra Bank, and asked for Mr. Bcott, the Cashier of the Bank, aad Opon being ahowa that genUenan, asked if there was not several notes of Ml Clay’s that were dae in a lew days, and was answered that there mere. M r. Scott was requested to give the whole amount of Mr Clay s indebtedness, wtich was jlone, and a draft on one of the New-York benhs wes banded him, and Mr. Pennington left the Bank with all Mr. Clay's notes paid.
