RAILED AD MEETING AT MILLVILLE '11m Hoard ot Directors of the Millville and Ulassboro Hailrond Company met at tbuir office in Millville, on Thursday of last week, when a number of the cilizene of the several sections of this county, and the low••r part of Cumberland, were present , to consult wiiii iiio Hoard, to ascertain the condition on which that company will undertake the extension of tho road to Capo 1slund, in compliance with tho provisions of i lie supplement to their charter, passed by (4« Legislature of New Jersey, at their lost

session.

We were glad to see so many of the peo. (■la of our county and along the route of the proposed extension in Cumberland, present i<l the meeting, and to discover the deep i •iterest In the enterprise which was manifested, both by the Hoard of Hireclora, and niir people. Quite a long and thourongb consultation was held, which resolted in the adoption by the Board of tho following preamble and resolutions: Waraiue, By the supplement to the Charter of the Millville nud Chuwboro Railroad Company, passed by the 1-egisliiinre tu it* Inst sosion, the said Company is nutbunted to receive-subscriptions lor the extension of the sniilToad to Ca|»e Island; iuii) whereas, a committee representing the people of Cape May county and elsewhere interested in said extension, have asked of this Hoard a ptvposition looking 10 the carrying out of the ubjeclof said supplement therefore. liesolvd—That when the right-of-way is secured, and one hundred and seventyfive thousand dollars is subscribed to the capital atock of #ai4 Millville and Ulassboro Railroad Company, for the said purpose, by satisfactory parties, and ten per cent 1 hereof paid, we will proceed at once to the constructing of said road, and complete the game in one year from the receipt of said ten per cent. A certified copy of tho above, to which is attached the corporate seal of the Millvilla apd Ulassboro Railroad Company, is in the bauds of Mayor Ware, the chairman of the committee appointed to meet thq Board of Directors of the above company So much for the agreement. The following it a copy of the beading of the subscrip, lion to be presented to the people, for their signatures. - W© the undersijrned, do hereby several ly subscribe to, and agree to become the owners of, the number of shares of the capital stock of the Millville and Ulassboro Railroad Company set opposite our names, and to pay all installments thereon, at such times and in such amounts, as may ho ori s- dered by the Directors of said company ; V und that we will in all things conform to \4ht-prniisions of the act of the I^isiatnre of the State of New Jersey, entitled

safplen-ent to the act enUXiSiT incorporate ISe HlIlviHeand Ulassboro Railroad." It is further understood and agreed, that th» undersigned shall have the privilege of tmying the amonnt of their subseribiions in labor and material, provided raid labor and material be famished at cash prices, and at sech time, and Hitch places and in sweh manner as the company, or their agents may require. It is also (briber understood, that none of these subscriptions shall be binding, un- • aggregrale subscription shall to one hundred and seventy-five

dollars.

is further understood, that this shall be exdutictly applied to ie Millville and Ulassboro RailMiilvitle to Cape island, in acthe supplement to the charil, passed by the Legislature Now doe. the reader fully comprehend re! If not. we ask him to re-read, e matter is fairly understood, l when it is so understood, no to discover that the railroad i in an aspect

occnr, except the loss of time and ink signing their names. It is sometimes the case, in matters of this kind, that an amount of subscription is obtained which doffs not insure the completion of the work, und installments are called in, and squandered, and the work never accomplished ; but it will be teen at once, that such cannot possible be the case here. Again, by the provisions of the subscription, os above, the amount of subscription must be applied exclusively to the building of the road between Cape Island and Millville, and cannot be used for any other pur pose whatever. Tho company cannot, if they desired, use it for tho benefit of tho section of the road above Millville. But for this there will bo no need, as that section, when completed (which will be within the next few month's) will be paid for. Another favorable feuture of this mutter is, that the company agree to complete the work within one year from the receipt of the first installment of ten per cent. Thu work is not to be delayed year after year, to sail the convenience of those who have it in hand, as is oflui the cate in such en-

terprises.

Again the subscriptions may be paid in work or material, where the subscriber 6 desire. There are numbers to whom this feature is an important consideration. During next fall and winter, the grading may be done, and the cross-ties furnished, by those who can do it without materially interfering with their other work, and who have not the cash to pay. From the nature of Ike above agreement and subscription, we think no one to see that the whole project is presented in plain sailing, without a possibility of risk ; and we can but think that the people will lay to a helping hand, in the farm of liberal subscriptions. Do not conenlt yourselves to see how small subscriptions yon can make ; but, on the other hand, how large ones, and be able to meet the pay ments as they may be called for. : Perhaps the sum of one hundred and reveuty-Gve thousand dollars may appear to be a large one ; and, indeed, it is it is not-expecicd that tho people along the route will subscribe this whole amount. All that is asked of them is b subscription of from seventy-five to one hundred thousand dollars; and this we believe they and will do. With it you may have a railroad, without it you may never expect one. If, then, the project fails it will be the fault of the people. But let the words “can't” and “fail,” for the time, become obsolete, and let the motto be toe can! tee

will!!

Tho committee was instructed to forward subscription books to all the other townships. The meeting wds addressed several times during its progress, by some of our citizens, and also by Jos. Xl. at the call of the chair.

C3TA corked'Bott’e was picked up on our jhore, a few days since, containing a note from H. Brower, of the schooner Boston, to Mary Brower. The note was written with a lead pencil, evidently in a harried manner, and so defaced when handed te us that we could not read it all.
