Jletoirtd. That the Piesidentbe authorirud to negotiate with the Cape May and Atlantic Railroad Company, for a contract wrilh the said company, to lake the project-.-d railroad from Kgg Harbor City lo Cape Island City on a lease of fifteen years from the completion of said m»4, at the rate of seven per cent, per annum or. the cost of The road, provided the said cost shall not, esecod five hundred thousand dollars, this O -mpany slocking the new road, when finiehed, and keepinc the same in repair daring the rime of the l•*a»e. and nlloaing the Oajw May and Atlantic Company lo hsrva th«- apitoiniiiirnt of the two principal Matioa agents, at Rgg Harbor City end Cape Island City, and the rent as agreed opon. to be fir-t paid out of the receipts from pesaeiicMS and for freight passed over the new road: provided, that the new mail from Kgg Harbor City to Cape Island City be completed within two year* from this
date
The above resolution was introduced by * member of that Board, and also of the Board of the Cape May and Atlantic road, and, we understand, considerably interested in real estate at Atlantic City. Now the resolution mey look very well on paper, but, when we coneider tho circumstances, we have not the least confidence in it; and we repent the questions which we proposed last week: “la the Camden an 4 Atlantic campany a responsible party, for thw fulfillment of such a contract? Is a company, whose •lock is not worth more than twenty cents on the dollar, which has never paid the stockholders one cent, and which cannot pay the interest on its bonds, a retjipii. •ibis party to pay =wen per cent, on nnrthy.
of our exchanges in thst vicinity, the people now expect to have a railroad, without unnecessary delay. Advertisements, under the authority of Gen. Cook, Chief Engineer of the company, for grading the entire road to Bridgeton, and alsd'lo Glass boro, to meet the Millville and Glassboro* raad, appear in the papers; and the editorials of those papers reprwaeal the speedy building of the road as a fixed fact. For our own part, from the time the people complied with Iho pro virions of the contract on the r part, by raising the required subscription of the one hundred thousand dollars, we have had but liitie doubt that the company would comply on their part. We could not bring ourselves to believe, thatsuch a corporatiau would be guilty of euch flagrant trifling with their engagements, as would most evidently appear to the world, from a failure thus to comply. It is probable that the company scarcely expected the people to meet their requirement, by raising the subscription, and consequently were cot prepared le go to work at once. It is not to be expected that auch an undertaking wilt be commenced in one moment, and rushed through.the next. But we hope the company have “got a good ready on them," and will carry the work steadily through ; and we congratulate our Bridgeton neighbors upon tbciiwprospect of a realisation of their fond, tlRugb long delayed, hopee. They need the ra\road, and we hope they will soon have it.. We need a railroad to Cape Island, and we'*hupo^ooo to have
one.

the icy standpoint of impartiality, and almost indifference. A terrible elorm has raged at Cbarlestea, since the meeting of the convention. Not a war of the elements of nature withouUdoors, but of the
political elements within.
The groat strife was npon the adoption of a platform ; which, when adopted, was either to narrow to accomodate the entire, convention, or had so much of northern ice in its composition, as to be both too cold and too slippery for the feet of some hot-blooded southerners, who had'nt taken the precaution to prepare themselves with" hob nails or ice-corks, and so they slipped .up ; or, in plain language, they bolted, and organised a convcniioa “on their own
hook.”
The platform adopted reaffirms the Cincinnati resolutions, and pledges the democratic party to abide by the decision of the Supreme Court on the question of Congressional or territorial power over slavery in the territories; favors the acquisition of Cuba; pledges the democratic party to such constitutional aid as will insure the construction of a railroad to the Pacific at the earliest practicable moment. What result of lhe split will remains to be seen ; but we can but think that the secession will prove a fixxie, nnd the seccdtgs will yet fall into lhe ranks, though facts may prove otherwise, even before we go to press. We cannot bring onrseWes to believe, however, till forced lo by facia, that a large portion of the Democratic parly will persist in a coarse so eai-
cidal.
The secedors, at last accounts, were doing nothing of importance, but were awaiting the action of the main body. Since the above wn* in type, we hare received intelligence that both adjourned on Thursday last, without making their nominations.
