CAPE MAY AND ATLANTIC BAILED AD. In last week - * Ware we m ide *oh>« retnark* in reference to an article in ' aditor of that paper undertook a aerere tbo Atlantic Journal, in which the reprimand of a former article in the Ware, jn reference to the Cape May and Atlantic Railroad. Now we have no idea of carrying on a newspaper quarrel, but we consid«r it onr doty to oar patrons, aa well as to ourselves, to look to the interests of Cape May county, and we shall do it. In the article refered to in the Journal, there are some points which require a little notice besides those noticed last week. In the 6rst place the Journal says: <» •‘The Camden and Atlantic Company Imre made a very liberal offer to our road." (the Cape May and Atlantic.) "and the company will be very blind not to avail themselves of this oner." Now the offer may be liberal enough, if the people could be made to believe that it ■was made in sincerity, and that the parties making it were able to abide by ait. But 4ou* it lo*»k probable that that company would undertake to pay seven per centum on the Cape May and Atlantic road, which ills admitted by their own resolution will cost nearly or quite half a million of ddlars.. when it is well known that their own road has been a sinking concern? They have made the offer, by the resolution refered to, it is true, bat did they, when they made that offer, anticipate that there was any prospect that the road would be built f «o that they would become reeponaihfe for the fulfillment of the offer? We think not, mod we believe that wc are justified, from the paat history of tho movements, as well as from the present aspect of affairs, in onr belief. What has been done for the Iasi three or four years, since thn- Cafm May and Atlantic project was started, to inspire the belief that there was the least prospect -of ultimate success? What amount of bona fide subscription is now on their Vboks, after a thorough canvass of the counties of Atlantic and Cape May, as well as Philadelphia and other places ? and where is the ball once to come from ? Will the Camden and Atlantic company make up the deficiency, should it amount to two or three hundred thousand dollars ? Will they make tho same offer that the Millville and Classboro' company have made complete the road to Cape Island, in year after 8175,000 is subscribed and ten per cent, paid in ? And are they able to do it. If they should make the offer? No offer is made, but to take that road at seven per cent, when completed, leaving the people to raise the entire amount necessary to build it. And do the people feel ready to raise $400,000 $500,000, and build the road within two years ? We would like to them raise one half the amount. A* we have said before, we believe that Ibe "liberal offer” wasytnade for no other purpose than to distract the railroad interest, and prevent the building of the road from Millville, for the simple purpose of building up Atlantic City, nt the expense «f Cape Island. The Camden and Atlantic Railroad was'bnilt for tho sole purpose of building np Atlantic City, and rushed through at an enormous expense with a view to that end, thinking that what they lost on the road would be more than made up on the property of Atlantic; but whether the sequel has warranted the sup. position, thus far, or not is another ques-
tion.
‘Now we do not censure those people for the course they take: It is bet a plain matter of business. Tbe people of Allantie City, aad those interested in property that*, whether they be the stockholder or directors of tbe Camden and Atlantic Bail, road Company or not, have a perfect right to look to their own inleresta, and we have no doubt tbegr will do it, aad we commend them for ft'- / »nd we also commend the edi. tor of the Journal for his watchful care over the interests of his own county. He would be recreant to his trust should he do other--trim. aad would justly forfeit the coufi* deuce and support of the people af his a commend them, we tglected duty of F our county. The people of have interests at stake, Jf they would act the part of ly will attaud to them, and tha right of the Journal to of Atlantic, we claim fit Cape May ; eire that right, without of '■rpilc' against the
Camden and Atlantic Railroad,or Atlantic City, or even oor clever brother the editor
of the Journal.
One word more before we leaaathis matter. Those who have read tho resolution of the Board of Directors of tbe Cam don and Atlantic R. R. Co., will doabtlemt recollect that there was a provision in that resolution, that the seven per cent, which they offer for the Cape May and Atlantic road when sompleteo, is Jirtlta be paid
and office, where we pass eight or ten limes daily; but we do not recollect to have seen more than one mao (?) there, at any one time, fbi the last three months, and wc are therefore led to conclude that the meeting must have been only a “one-horse affair." We also learn from the same paper, that a meeting of the Cape May and Atlantic Railroad company was held at Tuckahoe. on the 16th inst., at which directors of thatcompany were elected. We had never
of the receipts of the road. But suppose. I seen, or heard of, any previoas notice of
that does not amount to seven per cent, where ihco is tbe balance to come from ? There is no provisions for such an unlikely (*) contingency—nothing is to be bound farther than the receipts of the road. What then does tbe offer amount to? Why, simply that they will take the controle of the rood, manage it to their own liking, whether the people of Cape May like it or not; and if the road pays seven per cent, the stockholders may have the benefit, but should it %piount to less the stockholders rilsy pocket the lost; while, on the other hood, should it exceed seven per cent, the Camden and Atlantic Company
either of these meetings, and co'neequently do not know by whose authority they were called. Most of the persons said to have been elected in both boards are the same; which looks to us like “consolidation but bow, or by what process, theseLwo companies are to be co-n*o/<</-ated into one sound corporation, is a step above our scientific knowledge of the art of consolidation, but perhaps tbe Journal cau explain the whole
matter.

We I earn from tbe (May's Lauding) Atlantic Journal, that the annual meeting of tbe West Jersey Central Railroad Compa. ny was held at tha house of Jofin Doughty, Cape Island, on tbe 12lh inst., when directors were elected for tbe ensuing year. We were not aware that any man by the above natae resided, or owned any bouse, ot^tly Island, and did not know of any — L nueliag, until We saw it asnoanced in lournal; but seeing it there, we suppose it must be so, of course. We did know that a meeti jg was held at the Tontine Hoase. several weeks ago, at which director* of said company were elected, aad we annoanced the (act in the Wave. But we find that the persons said to have elected on the 12th. are nst the same as those which we previously announced; and we cannot aadefstaad why the compa. ny require to saU of directors. Can any oos explain to os the aktery ? We eappo4 tha bouse, at which it was intended to rep-

WWhat's in a Name?—There is evidently, something in tbe pame of the Republican Presidential candidate, for it is good enough to furaish the letters of which the name of the candidate for the- VicePresidency is composed.^ Every letter in the name of Hannibal Hamlin may be found in that of Abraham Lincoln—the last named of the former being taken right ont of the middle of that of the lat-
ter.
•yit is reported that another slaver, jrith 550 Africans aboard, has been seized of tbe Isle of Fines. 43-Tbe U. 8. steam frigate Niagara, which sailed from New York a few days since, for Japan, returned to New York on Friday last, in a leaky condition. She had four feet of water in her hold. Her pow der was all taken out of her. 4dTOn Thursday last a duel was fought 1 near .Savannah, between Mr. Lamar and Coniodorc Moore, late of the Texas navy. Neither man was injured. 43TA Sensible Opinion.—The Boston Herald, a democratic organ, speaks as follows of tbe work of the Republicans at Chicago: “The nomination, in many respects, is a strong one, and will be difficult to defeat, and those wbo Halter themselves that tbe democrats are to walk over the Presidential course with ease pill find themselves mistaken. The Convention at Chicago has given evidence of shrewdness, no less in tbo nomination of Mr. Lincoln than in tlie platform adopted, which is progressive without being ultra, and unless it is met bv a platform equally plain and intelligible it will require no prophet to interpret the the handwriting on the wall.” The Washington correspondent of the Boston Traveller states that it is re.ported in Washington, on the authority of, a lelat've of Mr. Everett, that he will not accept the position assigned to him upon the Baltimore ticket. ^From WASHUfhnyL—It is said here, and upon the best authority, that the slave trade is assuming new and” important features, and that the President is in possessien of undoubted information that a large number of slavers have been captured at various places off toe coast of Cuba. Tbe impression that has prevailed for some time as in the complicity of tha Captain General of Cuba is said lol>e entirely confirmed. Tbe Custom House, and other officials of tbe island, also, are said to be largely interested in tbe trade. It is believed that the names of these parties, or some of them, at least, are in the hands of the Exe cutive. This asserted complicity on tbe part of these men. and of the Captain General particularly, is creating much excitement.
