THE DAYSTAB OF FREEDOM.

Of course all is rough and new here.

cannot bat feel, as I write, tkat it beggars description. Welfwasit that the early pilgrims did not find this “land of premise.” I fear the barren Eastern States wonld have remained a waste de-

sert.

- ^Tlus rich, black mould brings forth from year to year to reward the labor of the'husbandman, without artificial fertilizers. All tbat is required is to break the ground, put in Hie seed, and keep -down the weeds. Owing to the m< {S' tore and richness of the soil, crops do not suffer here os they do in the cast from long continued drought. We have had no rain here of any consequence for about eight months, until within a few weeks; yet wc have a prospect of good crops. The country being new, fruit has not been cultivated to any extent; but here again nature comes to oiM aid. Wild plums grow in abundance. They are far superior to your common purple plum, more like the peach plum. We .also have grapes much larger than your ‘Eastern wild grapes, and in almost in■crediblo quantities. Many families, after making all they wish for jelly, and to -dry, make wine by the barrel. Elder •berries, strawberries, raspberries, goose--berrle^cuftants and blackberries, also : grow wild. For convenience, and to isee the effect of culture, we have transplanted some of these to onr garden* Here where we live, the variegated 'bluffs agd hills on the east, and the fine proves of timber on the west, (bordering the Missonri.) form a natural wall »&nd hedge to this level (to the North ■and South,) and boundless prairie, which is now carpeted with the most choice
