To our mind, while' wo admit the duty of erery cilisen to exercise a jealons care over the ioteresls of tbe country, there is something revolting in the spectacle presented by a political campaign as it usually exists, and not as It should exist. It is, indeed, strange that men—reasoning, thinking men ; men, who, in other matters, appear caitdid and sensible; and even Christian men (or professedly so.) should bo lose their balance, dethrone their reason, sacrifice their prinriple, and throw thamselves into tbe current of pnblic excitement, to be carried

Musical.—The musical department of a Cape Island bathing season is in operation. The celebrated band of Messrs. Hassler arrived some days ago, and took up their sninmer quarters at Congress Hall and the Colombia House, where they are engaged for the season. The presence of these accomplished performers has become a kind of indispensable wiik us, at this season of the year, almost as much os Old Ocean himself. There is something sublime in ii* music, especially when lashed into fury by Borens ; but, after, all, we cacnot dispense with Hassler’s trenpe. •TThV New York steamers, on their daily arrivals at this place from New York remain at the wharf ootil 8 o’clock A.
