tera" where »he had
akow herseH, putting on her atreogth, •he passed the Delaware off Long
Eaitot ’ | Branch. That she might clear the
shoals, she headed oat lo sea, and did not heave in sight at. the Island-, until half-past sis o’clock vbe next morning. The piaraas and obsefTateties of the liotels we?e crbwdecl; and eTerything in' the sha'pe of a spy-glass was in demand, to aid the natural vision, in & view of the greatest vessel that ever floated. At 8i o’clock the ship was moored %hout -4 miles off the Rteambont landing. The excitement on the Island was wild. As the ship entered the bay, .a grand salute of cannon was fired from
the Congress Hall lawn.
Her passengers were landed and made way for the Island, as they said, to gel
something fit to cat.
The ship was thrown open for visitors at 10 o’clock, ot fifty cents a head, tuul steaii.ers chartered for the occasion by the company, made (aonrly excursions from the landing to her. Th«ro were many thousand > that visited her. An excursion of the John A. Warner, from Philadelphia, arrived at 1 o’clock, with nearly a thousand on board, who came over to the Island and enjoyed a dip Ip the briny ocean.— Large excursions were also made from Wilmington, Chester and New Castle. The day was beautiful, and passed off
jovially on all sides.
As we ore going to embark ip the Great Eastern for New York to-night wo will close till another lime, far an account of
/urthef proceedings.
When it was first reported that the monster—the Great Eastern—the tenth wonder of the world, was to make an exenraion to Cape May, the majority of the people regarded it as only a rumor, ' and a hoax; and even when the advertissmenU came oat ia the New York paper*, people were slow to believe. There seamed to be an impression that, aomshow, there was a mistake—“that the thing ooald’at be did.” Cue said that, by sa doing, she would iijvalidate her insurance; and another, that it would be a violation of oar maratime laws, 4^c. Ac., and the Philadelphia papert sa|d that she would slick fast in the mnd in New York harbor. But, notwithstanding e’1 doubts and unbelief, the-peopje from all quarters began to turn their attention towards Cape Is-
land, hoax or no hoax.
Last Saturday the twp steamers running to here from Philadelphia, brought down five hundred passengers or more, which marly filled all tbo accommodations on the Island. On Monday n small steamer, the Shrircr, arrived with an excursion of aboi^t one hundred; and the Kennebec, the only steamer of the lines from Philadelphia on that day, brought eighth hundred; 'with several * learners to arrive on Tuesday, at ihc time we write in the morning.
