CHUECH ratlVAL. On Tburadnj of next week, n Church Festival, more commonly known as a Harvest Home, will be held in the grove of Wijah H. Bennett, near Cold Spring about four miles from the Island, on tbd Cape May Turnpike, lor the purpose of raising money for the liquidation of the debt on the Cape Island Baptist Church. The Church has been considerably perplexed with this dgbt for teveral years pa«tj and, mainly throngb Hid exertions of lamembers of the church, and their friends in Philadelphia and elsewhere, more then •800 of the debt has been paid, within the list three year*; and it is hoped, that, through the liberality of friends, and the continued exertioui. of the church, this debt will soon he entirely removed; ahd. ;b view of this, the ladies most respectfully call upon their friends for liberal assistance, in the present undertaking. Woonsrows. N. J. Aug. 13ih 18€0. DEAE-WATa.—Altar a long drought rbieh has withered aud crushed vegetation

for'several weeks past, and almost tsrhad the land to powder and dost, we have this day been favored with an abadonee of rain. Ha who tnakelh the clouds his chariot, and tha wings of Um wind, and ever looks with kindness toward man, hapfe Visited ns in mercy, calling loudly upon ns for thanksgiving and praise. Yet how very slow is tbe human heart in thankful returns to the great giver of oil good. If a frail fellow man could, by racking his brain fot years, invent a plan by which be could .water a single acre, his name would bo published through the length aud breadth of tbe land and handed down to fntore gencrationa as a benefactor of his race ; but when our kind Father in heaven waters millions of acres in a few hours, tilling our bsrus with plenty, and loading our tables with luxuries, there is only here and there a heart that looks up to Him with gratitude and praise. Much of the corn crop through middle and lower Jersey, it la to be feared is past recovery, bet many fields will now revive and yet yield some reward to the tiller for his toil. It is singular to observe the dilforelit effects of droughts upon different fields of corn in the same neighborhood. Some are entirely stopped and dried up almost like fodder, while others have a lively green appearance, and bidfair for any average crop Perhaps their difference may be accounted for, partly by tho soil, and portly by tho manner of cultivating. 1 n our opinion the barbarous practice of ploughing corn late and deep, and leaving the ground rough destroys thousands of bushels every year. 1 .ust Week the great Penns-Grove Camp Meeting came off with more than usual in terest. Many persons who have formerly been favorable to Camp Meetings, have concluded of late that their day of usefulneat is about over ; however this may be, we think this lato Meeting will impress the public mind more favorably than any which has been held for some time past. Every thing was managed to a good advantage so tl at no disorder or rowdyism was allowed on the ground. A Inigo runiber of tents were erected from Philadelphia, Camden, Salem, and all tbe surrounding charges, perhaps ont hundred and twenty in all, and m-ar did preachers or people enter more heartily into the good work than upon that occasion. There was not to much of noise aa «f deep heart searchings, and deliberate rcsolotlons to be more like Christ. Some twenty-five or thirty persona also profei conversion during the Meeting. The great California Street Preacher, Rev. William Taylar, was present at tbe Meeting. He is certainty a man of mark—a real cbaracter. Ha went to San Francisco in IMS «e Seaman’s Chaplain for the Port, but not ■atiffied with his ordinary pulpit labors, be preached regularly in tha streets twice every Sabbath, for several years, 1o Sabbath breakers, gambler* and drunkards, and met with great anccesa. He afterwards gave his name as endorsee, among others, for n great chnrcb enterprise, nod Home for Seamen ; which soon after its completion woe burned to nsbaorinrolving the suretfea of to the amount of some 20,000 dollars. Most of the snreties were rained hy the fire, so nearly the whole emocntfell on him He being morally honest, wooid not lie under tbe censure even of the appearance of evil, so he asked leave of absence, came to the Staiet, wrote several excellent books, which have a large sale, and by this means be boa nearly paid off tha wliola amount, besides doing the work of a revivalist in hundreds of ebnrches throughout the land. He labored much during the Camp Meet, ing in preaching and exhortation, and mnltilades listened with great attention nod many tears. Bat I mast close.
