^^B * LOCAL AX!) STATU iFFAIIJS. I J. GEAKVILLZ LEACH. BepcrLr. Another Appeal to t&G Ladies. It now becomes me l<> fuIG'. my psora- j Wei and give the public to v.oderttMid ^^B what the new project is, that J reiered to in the columns cf the last "Ware." It it tlils. I have been requested by ^^B tKe "Ladies' Aid," pf PhiUdclpliia, to obtain articles in this County for the : , army hospitals. The maimer in which j they arc to be obtained was for mc^ ■ to decide, and I have, therefore, coramoJ nicated with ladies in different sections J of tiie county, to learn' what they be- ; Jlexeff to be the best mode of procccding. In every instance, I found: it to'j l>e the opinion that sowing societies, in ' *" each neighborhood, would well promote the object; and I invite the ladles of Cape May — in the name of mercy and ^^^B charky — to assemble and organize sewtng societies. The articles you are cs^B pecially dedred to make, arc bcd-qfiilts ^^^B and slippers for the sick soldiers. Both ^B of these can bo made out of material ^B that nearly every -house-keeper has- in j her posstssion. The quilts are seven ^B feet in length and fifty-four inches in j ^B width, ampBre made of the same malcri- j ols as qu/fts generally are. It matters not whctlier the square* are pieced alike, i or whether they match each other ; so ■ ^B they are put together good and strong, ^B U all that is needed. The slippers are ^B got up on a very simplo and plain style, and are made of carpet, dtuggct, stout bassinet or cloth, and iineii with cfcnionflannel. 'The Philadelphia Ledyer says ^B * riint a pair -of these dippers can be made ^B in an llpur of steady working. I have ^^B a pattern of them, sent mo from the ^B "Ladies Aid." ^B Daughters of America, will you or^B ganize these socidtics ? It is irt your - H power to .do it ! I believe there are but few counties in the loyal States hnt ^B have societies that Sre vigorously ^B working for some like patriotic purpose. ^B Cape Alay is the only county in New H Jersey where the ladius have not organ(zed into "aid aociaties." Shall this be said of jou long ? True, you have done H much towards fitting out Cape May and H other soldiers, ill different- companies, to m save them from disease and rcniLrr.iIieiu ' comfortable; and I donbt if anr<oaiily : has done more according to the number V Of, Inhabitants. ' But you. are able, and ^Bk „„ I hoj'fr eqwnHy ready, to tender a lit-lp-ing hand towards saving the sick volunteer from dying, and making him somewhat comlortalile while he lies upon a ^B hard bed, Writhing in pain or scorched ^B with fever, and, permtps, agonizingly suffering from a terrible wound received H by. a ballet or shell, a bayonet or^word, H as he was bravely eonuiyiing for the m rights of our Country and f->r Ac pro- ■ taction of you, its citizens, beneath the ■ "star-spangled banner*' — the flag of the B free. Some slightly object to aiding the B hearty, fighting soldier, offering as an ^B excuse sr plea, that Bey are well enough provided for from other sources. This i<, not so. Bat, let it be as it may, all I 'arc asked to boar ia mind that the %rtiCles here spoken ol are to go into the hospMals and nowhere elae. . ' Ladies, reflect that the sick soldier has* «*. 0 no mother, wife or staler to ^fand at bis bed-side and sptsk words of cheer- j i fulness or consolation^ to soothe his fevarcd brow and moisten bis 'parched bps; but be is confined to a lonely chani- 1 bar, without a single comfort of home. Are you not anxious then, to help in I (his glorious cause You are beings of | tender compassion, mercy and love, or, ' at least, acknowledged so to be; and now is the fitting time, if ever, for es- 1 yS tablishing in the minds of the civilized . world-that these wpdded traits of character, bequeathed to yoa by the lime honored "women of the revolution" are carefully preserved and proudly cxliibi- 1 tod. Point out to me a female that is too unmerciful and eoid to aid in administering to the wants of those confined » * in our army hospitals, and I wiP show yon a betng that is nh worthy to bear tho ' * name of woman, bat deserves the execration of her sex ; yes, such a one, t At void be spurned (rota female society. B

| These societies ought to be organized 1 t j by tie election of a president,, secretary, ' and treasurer. A roll list should be j ( ' opeucd that all who desire to become ' member* may- enrol their names for "im- 1 ' ! mediate service." A committee might * I be appointed to canvass the locality In I which a society is started, to obtain nil '' scraps of calico, Ac., for making bed- • quilts, aud pieces of carpet fbr- slippers. . 1 | There are some communities where j the population is so thinly settled that : Q a society cannot -bb maintained. In any i c 1 tueh plaCe. I luyjta the ladies to send me ; t pony o£Alie fallowing articles, which are g ! urgently aeajkd in the hospitals:—;! blank® b, ifeffqfm^, feather pillows, un- t j derslqrL-i, stockings. sheets, and books, j ( Pcrson7T\ahy part of the ennnty de- j t t siring to make slippers con obtain the , B \ pattern with directions from me. jj Do not linger, ladies, f- r another to ] s begin the work ;. but let all arise simul- 1 J taiieously and wilh detcrminajiou. O, ; could you step into -the hospitals and j witness the suffering, you would not j a waste a leisure moment, daring the pre- t scut winter, but would work with dou- ^ i ble energy to prepare things that would , ' abate their sufferings. Imagine yonr- . self in the position of the sick pnd w^nn- ; , ded soldier, and then repeal the golden t ■ rnle— " Do unto others as you would j ' have tlrcm do to you." J. OBANVIU.K LEACH.
