¥ LOCAL AND STATE AFFAIRS. , I. QXiltVILLE LEACH. JUporttr. *,'[ Hal lead Meeting J la the "Wave" of ]a«t Thnrsdny, we ! gave p Urijf notice of a Railroad Sleet- • tng, to be bchl that day, at the WaiS- 1 iogton nonie, Supposing that a tew | neighbor* woohl nmteoible together, and have a chat with Mr. Dangan on rail- : road'niatterf ; but, to our mtrpriae at the ( appointed time, notwithstanding- the shortness of the notice, wc found a large j number aueuibled, entirely exceeding our expectations The meeting organ, fjjgd by calfiug Dr. S. S. Marcy to the Mr. Dangan being present, was called Upon, and made'some remarks, in a plain, bnsioess-like manner, without any , p attcinpl at speech-making. ojpording to the oiunl acceptation of thartertu. fie j simply stated facts, as they have trans- j pi red since his connection with our ' railroad interest, showing tho perfect feasibility of ths plan now before lb: public. These facts are fully set forth 1 in an editorial in another column, hence i we deem it unnecessary to repeat them here; and w# simply acknowledge our ■ indebtedness to Mr. D. for mauy of the • facts slated in that article. . Semil questions were propounded I to Mr Dungan, and answered totheeu- 1 lire satfsfaction of nil present. J The remarks beiug closed, on motion i of W. IJ Miller, a unanimous vote of i thanks was tendered to Mr. Dangan, | for his untiring exertions for our rail- ; rpad, and pledging the hearty co opera- j lion of those present. This meeting is worthy of contrast j with a certain great railroad meeting, I held at the Court House, some weeks ! since, at. which we were present, in which a certain corpulent "individual" figured quite largely. That was called by several hundreds of flaming bills, j sent broadcast all over the coodty, some weeks before the meeliug, and the meeting was jurld at the center of the county; while thjs was only announced in the "Wave" oi -the day the meeting was held, and held at one end of the county ; and yet there were more people present at this last meeting then at the former j one. At the former meeting we had n ■tnge load of speakers, consisting of j v Gov's, . ex-Congressmen and 'squires, j who made great flourishes, ransacked the English language— sometimes with ; a 4>rogue<j-and poured forth an untold, j * " and untellgble amount of eloquence and j inredire, while, at the Jotter, simple facts j were slated, In a plain manner, by one man, who makes no pretensions to speech-making ; and yet, al the close of the former meeting, "JInmbug" was the word most prominent on every man's tongue, while, at thmlatter, ggery word was believed, and every one present felt > satisfied that we had now got on the right track, and something was going to be done. We never attended Wny j public meeting, whatever the ocea- 1 ' r sion, where more unanimous sslisfaclipn ifyiog to' hear the remarks from til, "as tbey were leaving the house- One man said that -he bed heard a great many railroad speeches before, but be had •ever before heard one when be believed evify word of R, as he did la thia case. And what made this difference? Tho answer is ebvloas. It was simply the j differlhct, of oen at the head of the two, j and the 1* - afcfrdrcumitanceisurroun- j ding the Mr i. enterprises; and the re- f solts of the two, we* confidently beleve > will warrant this tliffereace to the end. Tka Kivtls«r IM*le. We learn that the privateer Dixie I which we noticed as going ap the "Dela- ! wort Inst week, was captnted while st- , tempting to ran the blockade at George- | town, 8. C., loaded with a fail .freight j ef cotton, rise and turpentine. The : captain ef her said she waa the first- vet- , ael to hoist the Confederate flag ; which., was done ia Charleston harbor. The I Dixie has captnrvd four or five of our merchant vessels. When boarded by j the pilot off the Island, she was in com- • nisad of Capt- Henry H.ud, of CkttB ■ Creek, in thia .county.
