£jjt Cape Iflas <0rtaa SMiit, , CAPE ISLAND X. J. Ii J. S. IXACH, Bdttm and Propriator. ! 1 ■ - . . r | C Thursday. Hay. 21, 1863 < i OWEPQI.LA1! l'KU ANNUM I { CAPS KAY LAUDS. There is one inaltrr eliich w* regard j ' to he of special inttre*t to the people ; of thU county at the preiest time, in j ' view of the speedjr completion of our j 1 railroad, wbick those interested in teal ^ estate Will do well to look to. We re- j : fer not now to C«pe Island, but to the j ' agricnHnra! portions .of the countj. j la inaaj jmria of the r'onntj there are quite large tracts of land, now uo- ; j eoltiemted. The owner* hare broad . acres mora ti>«i» is of any real use to ' them ; and all of this may be pnt to ; good use ; not, howcrcr by krepiug It • in pttstbi hand', but by offering inducemcnta to othersabrosd to purchase •ad improve tt. * — a| ' We beliere it is a well established troth among eensiblc agriculturist*, that more land than can lie well tilled and ' manured ia a detriment ratber than a benefit to the owner. A small field or farm, well cnltirated, will yitld a greater net profit than a large one half cultltot«d. Labor expended on land not well manured, will not pay day, wagea and the expense of mauurea. Let the farmer try It. Take two acrea of ground, and expend n certain amount for uiuuures, only sufficient for one acre, and at the eaiae time tako one acre, of the same kind and quality of ground, and expend j the same amount for manure, and "then calculate the -value of the labor and the eropa of the 1 wo lots ; deduct ,lho expenses of each from the value of the crops of each, aod we think it will be found that- the real profit of the one acre will exceed that on the two acres. WUln our laud in Cape May will yield a good crop with proper manariag, it wiU awt pay for tba labor when not maaared ; and, in the tame rayiq, there, is •w a tnal loaa, wkara there ie of manure. Heace we argue cihurTuaively, that no man almuld platff and now mora ground than Im> can ci\Ui*ale and inauuro well. Xow, an wc have stated before, there ia a large amount of land iu Cape May more than the present owners eaa nse ' to advantage, which remains dead prop- i erty to them, which may be brought to good account, by selling it to otbert who ; caa and will cultivate it. There are farms entirely tod large, one half of . which would be worth more to the pro- ' cat owaeca than the whole of it. Aal there are inducemeola to per- i aoua to take op this laud, end improve it, thereby improving the entire county. Tba hott of Cape May is usually rood, and easily worked ; the climate is uo surpassed ia the world ;* the natural privileges for fish, oysters Ac , is a strong inducement, while the cornplelion of the railroad, soon 1 9 be consummated. opening communication with FhUadelphia Ac. offers an inducement net heretofore possessed, and seema to be the fialahiog stroke in this way ; and with the proper tact with tbe people, io a few yean ail our waste land may be put to good account, auu Cape Map become indeed a garden spot. Let any one travel along the line of the Camden and Atlantic Railroad, or the Miltville and Ulatshoro Railroad, and compare tbe present condition of thoee portions with wbst they wsre a few yean agb, (before the railroads were b*Ul) and tbey wiU be convinced what may ba done in that way ; sod yet these localities are not worthy of a com psrison with Cape May. Take, for lnt'aaee, 1 ineland, on tbe Miilrille and Glsiaboro Railroad. Two or three ye«n ego it was a wilderness, but bow a teat*: |e springing op, and the whole country wrpund it fast becoming a beautiful agriewltnral portion of tbe state. Ilea from various sections of the conntry are toeWng there, "pnrchaslng land, iwpf**t«g jt> *nd crating dwellings, stoves, barns and other buildings; acd •he wbrie conntry around bis aa air of freepwliy.

Row the seme 'may l- el teamed io j 1 May, where is now little or notb- 1 bet barren jUnds. Bat' Low wns 1 j this accomplished ? What first gave this ' movement nn impetus ? Was It by bold- - ' the lands at extravagant prices 7 , Fsr from iL The men bav>ng charge ; of the movement, at fifit" offered their ' land at low price*, and thus the first , j settlers were induced to purchase ; and | the bell was put in motion, which bat j 1 continued to roll, until the landholders i ere now able to sell their lands nt ad- I ! rneced prices, and have tbe pleasure of ! seeing prosperity spring up where late | 1 was nothing but a wilderness. And j ■ this is by no means a solitary case; but | the same is true all over tho county ; [ end this is the secret of success iu any such enterprise. -Let the tame be done . here. Do not hold your lands too high j at first, for if you do yoit\$$|knever set 1 I the ball in motion. Where there are ' . large tract* of uncultivated land, or • large and unwieldy farms, let a portion ' ' of it be bold at prices that will induce ' purchases, and the balance wilt soon 1 sell el advanced rates, and it will, be found in the end that tbe first sales, even • at low rales, were the most important i ones, giving and impetus to the enter- 1 prise We are af^id that our laud- ! holders hold their property too high, ! thus preventing the commencement of prosperity. This will be found, -in the cud to be a fatal mistake. We may, if we choose, entirely eclipse tbo places mentioued above, as we have etory net- 1 oral facility for doing so. tSfTlie reports which we hoticed j ' last week, that Hooker had agaii.cros*ed the Rappahannock, and was idranc- , 1 ing towards Richmond, and th^t Dix j ' had captored Richmond, proved to be ; 1 incorrect. It la said that Ilookcr inten- 1 1 ded to uiake the advance, but the order 1 wea countermanded by Gen. Halteck. I |3y** Rebel authority says that Gen. , Grant has captured Jackson, Mias , af- , ter a whole day's hard fighting.1 It is . most probably true, r py"8lonewall" Jackson has died • of wounds received at the hrto battle. I He was tbe flower of the rebel army.
