He ihowed that the government bed not sufficient evidence against the Alabama to detaia her until after she bad sailed, and explained the difficulties in the way of interference in each cases, ne drew a line between ordinary vessels equipped for war purposes and steam rami, which are in ihsasslvta formed for nets ef offence, and might be used without ever touching Confederate shores. 1I> asserted that the government wss ready to do everything the duties of nenlrelity required—everything that is just tt s friendly nation, and such as they would wieh dons to tbemseliee, but wonld npt yield one'jot of right to (he menace of foreign Powers- He complimcuted the federal government and Mr. Seward j upon the fairness with which they have ■ discussed the matters ?f difference; bat j said there were others beside Senator i Sumner who bad acted differently. rjgpgjjg; j ARMY OP THE POTOMAC. j W ash i rotor, Oct II. — A letter fro® j tbe headquarters riff the Army of 'he i I Potomac soys >— For two or three dsye the enemy have | i been concentrating a heavy force sronud I Madison Court House, and on Friday j night and Saturday morning they moved j out of tbe town in a northwardly dircc- j tlon. A diviion of infantry, a large force of j cavalry, and considerable artillery were j occasionally seen by onr signs! men : pu-Jiipg through the openings of s j forest which generally conceals tbe road. , The object of the movement conld not at that time be determined upon . Veslerdsy evening reports from the ' front represented that, eeriy in the morning one of Kilpetrick's cevelry.ljri- j gsdes, consisting of the Fifth Michigan, j Fifth New York, and Seventh Pcnnsyl- ] vsnis, and another cavalry regiment, j attempted to make s recoonoissance on the sontb side of Robertson's River, when they were met by n large body of Stuart's Rebel cavalry. A fight ensued, continuing an hour, whan our eavalry fell back upon tfie infantry reserves. After another severe contest onr infantry were compelled to give way, and a considerable number of them were captured. A detachment of our cavalry then dashed upqn the enemy, retaking all tbe prisoners they had taken, with the exception of fifteen or twenty of the infantry. Out entire force was then pushed back by the Rebels towards Culpepper, akirmiabiog on the way, sod contesting every foot of ground, j Heavy firing"!*- the afternoon indii csted that the contest bad been renewed. J Onr signal station on the summit of ; Thoroughfare Mountain was nearly oal j off, b8i fortunately the entire •party/ with their property, escaped, i It appeara to be generally believed that tbe main bedy of Gpneral Hill's corps has passed from tbe right to tbe left of onr front, pursuing an obscure route near the Blue Ridge, intending to ; make a demonstration on onr right and rear, for tbe pnrpose of cutting off onr railroad communication Measures arc preparing to give him n fitting reception in that quarter, but should the movement be simply a ruse to cover a heavy stuck on onr front we , ' aire prepar.d for ft, as the groaud baa 1 beea cleared of everything calculated to embarrass a general and vigorous battle on onr pert. The advance of General Hill's corps probably commsnced moving from Madi- j son Court House on Thursday morning, sod by this time it most be between Gaurdeioe Fork and Acsthsnis River. It was positively sUtcd yesterday ; morning that tbn Rebel cavalry and - were upon the 8perryvi!!e and : Culpepper pike. On Friday tome guerrillas were seen on Pony Mooptalo, three miles southwest of Qjripepper, and are sopposed to been accreted in tbe Devil's Deo, a cava In the mountain. A citizen, who waa compelled to conduct a scouting party, failtd to find it, and, under tbe belief that he porposely misled onr party, he has been arrested. FROM ROSECRANS' ARMY. Ctxcixxsn, Oct. 1*. — A ifepsleh from Indianapolis says tWworgoons have arrived there direct from Chattanooga, who were taken prisoners iu the Chickfight. They were stripped of everything. Tbey say that Ibe impression is general that Bragg will attack oa Tuesday next. ReinforcemenU bad arrived ; they came by the first train tbrnogh from Bridgeport. The road has been repaired, and all important points are strongly defended. Lookout Monntaio, from which Bragg endeavors to bombard Rosecrans, is eighteen bandred feet higher than Chatthree miles distant by wegoa road, and leas than two mile* In a direct Missionary ridge, where Rebel dispatches are dated, is abont ons thousand fast high, three miles from Cbattaaooga by road, and two miles by sir line. Lookout Mountain and MMonary Ridge nearly encircle Chattanooga, which .Use in a basin rormed by tba mountainous range* around it. Bragg baa an ope^railroad communication with Rome, forty mile*, and Atlanta, mm bandred and ihirty-eix miles distant, whence bo rem bring up lb* bea .ieat siege gane cast at both these points. The Etowah Shall Works are aizty milaa from Chtttanooga, aleo connected therewith by railroad.
