II. EdgctL One Of her songs — certainly - not the beat— was encored. • The opening address, by Mr. Henry. Rutherford, was earnestly and effectively rendered, as was also a paraphrase of ^Etop's old fafofei " The fox and the grapes," sung" by foor little girta. In the recitation, "Washington," Mr. J. A. Crease gave creditable evidence both of the ability and the endeavor to excel, " When I was a maiden," sung and illustrated in pantonine by the little "five year old" , Baltic, delighted the audience nnd win j well done. Next came the "Song of j the Flume," a fine recitation, very cor- j rectly given by Miss Alice Spaulding. j Then followed an original oration by' Prof. Bell, au effort which in depth or j thought and eloquence of expression, is seldom equalled by any speaker who is heard in this place. The next song, " People will talk," was the one en- . cored. Mrs. Ed gen's pocin, composed for the occasion, had for ita subject •' Raiment," and aa the Star 3/ Me Capt has already given a sketch of it, - we pass to the dialogue, " Dutch Indeed," so comicriL both iu matter and manner, aa to Win greal applause.- ! Cain find Abel appeared iu characters ! vastly different from those of martyr j and murderer, and yet played an in1 genious part for inanimate tilings. The tableau, "Jems," was truly fine, since, by a skillful arrangement of lights, drapery, etc., and a really queenly person, Miss Selovcr was made to represent a beautiful work of the sculptor's art. " Little Red Hiding-Hood, " with her basket^ made it demure little picture. "The family threshing machine," capllallv done by Mussrs. Looming and I.udtam, proved no new invention, as many a husband too familiar with a wite- wielded broomstick may attest. In the tableau, ('Justice, Liberty, and Truth," Miaacs Souder, Sclover, and Spaulding, were lovely personifications of our favorite goddesses. "Ready for the question," showed an interesting couple at au interesting crisis in their history. The recitation, "Sheridan's Ride," was given by Mr. Jonas Miller, with such energy and evident appreciation of the spirit of the piece as to show marked talent in the young orator, who was loudly applauded. The tableau, "Faith, Hope and Charity," was another .lovely picture, iu which Misses Hires, Sclover, and Benczet personified those Chris tain graces.— "Our future President, the boy who reads the pipers," was splendidly dune by Master Delaware Wenzellc. May Ibis little incident , of ids childhood prove prophetic of hia ftituro success. " Sleep," recited by Mr. Joecph Wbcatoo, won acclamations from the audjcnce. It was a good piece, aptly rendered, and was followed by a very beautiful tableau, "The bridal scene.". A sweet song, " we shall meet again," was (hen sung by Misa Edgctt, and succeeded by the striking tableau vlvmnt, "The .Witeh of Endor, "In which the "witch " evokes the ghost of Samuel, which arises to the astonishment of the soothsayer, and 8aul also. The witch (Miss Hires,) evinced much skill lu the exercise of her magic art, and a strong calcium light added effectiveness to this and the next tableau, " 11stcuere never hear mny^aod of themselves," an amusing group, Misses Sclover and Edgett, and Messrs. Bell and GibUe. . , Now, greeted* with shouts, and astorm of applause, appear "Pomp'' and " Sambo," and relate "Tho Railroad Accident," with other1 witty . ethiopianisms. Messrs. Crease and Rutherford were "contrabands" complete,/.™ Um., and this part of the performance was noisily encored. Without any unnecessary delay the different ports of the exercises succeeded each other, and the actod charade "love-si ck " coming next iu onler, WSia pronounced many to be the beat, oak was surely the funniest tM«g of the evening. No one could tee and hear it without concluding with Miss Emily, " that it U alive to be in love." AJtcr this, all gathered around the instrument, and ' sang " The Mayville Parting Song," ' composed for a former occasion by the Principal, and thus concluded one of the mast pleasant and interesting entertainments which the people hereabouts have eqjoyed for a long time. The students of Mayville Academy did credit to their teachers and themselves, and tfie other young people of the county will do well to emulate their commendable endeavors to perform well and thoroughly, all that they undertake.
