The mis- : take they make la colossal. Life is too i short to be spent in creating troubles : which are not there. Dr. A. F. McBride, the Mayor-elect of Peterson, places civic pride in the forefront of municipal assests and sets an example which the officials and inhabitants of other cities might well emulate. Ia forecasting hie administrative plans Mayor-elect McBride says: "We have one of the finest cities in New Jersey; in fact, one of the finest anywhere ; all that is lacking is a little more civic pride. We are backward in that we don't let the outside world know "what a really fine city we have. But as soon as it is possible we expect to have s Chamber of Commerce or some civic organization to further that end." The backward cities in thiB country as a rule are the ones that, have hid their light under a bushfT. — Jersey City Journal. Cape May should take notice and also get busy. A notice to the goerning bodies in the taxing districts printed by authority of the County Board of Taxation I will be found in 'another column in this issue of the Ledger. The notice is timely and should be read and heeded by iho«e who have the making of the appropriation to be met bv tax levied during the coming year. The County Board have ' one well to call attention to the fact that neither upon the assessor not upon the County Board can the reaponsiblility for failure be p'aced. It rests on the governing body and the time when provision must be made against deficiency, is at the lime when the appropriations are made. The Ledger does not believe there is any excuse for an accumulated deficiency such as that which has characterized the management of Ocean City's finances Jh the past. There are rumors that notwithstanding the expenses of the past ' deficiencies are again the rule. The notice of the County Board assists to remind of the recommendation* of the expert auditors made a few years ago and wi-ich so far as the Ledger knows have to this time beea well nigh complet- ly Ignored. It would seem that euough has been sai t and that more need not De said touching the matter in question. — Oceaa City Ledger. The difference between the harbor conditions at Cape May and Atlantic City are easily-stated. By the closing np Turtle Gut Inlet three miles above here, there wU be an area of about 1500 acres from which the water of the sounds will low out of Cape May harbor entrance, and tha depth in the entire area will be from 12 to 40 fee'. At Atlantic City 'he area is about for..y acres. At Cape May millions of yards of material have been dredged from the sounds • to form the large basin adjacent to the city, containing Dot less than five hundred acres and a depth-of from 35 to 40 feet. At Atlav tic nothing like this has been or can be done. Here, by building" jetties one-half or three quarters of « mile aaaward a depth of from twenty-five to

v , r thirty feet is reached, and an easily navigable channel runs up and down the shore. At Atlantic there ia a sue- 1 cession of shoels for ten miles out Cape May conditions are pronounced aea faring men to be ideal for the proposed harbor of refuge, Atlantic's are non-esxistent ^and all of the noise is made for the purpose of ob- ' taining free advertising, the agitators , themselves knowing that a harbor j there with or without government aid ( cannot be created. . i We reprint on the first page an article i of very encouraging character, not only i of the information it«contains ' with reference to the government work , the harbor bql also because of its , statements with reference to Senator All the people of this city are gratified that a man of such preeminent ability and of such distinguished rank among the great leaders of the country in business and finance, should be interested in Cape May. That the most sanguine expectations with reference to the development of this resort and city will be fully realized under such leadership, there is no reasonable person who doubts. Our people should unite in assisting in every practicable way, in this development. The Atlantic City papers have practically announced that the harbor project about which Atlantic boomers have been making a great deal of noise for free advertising purposes, is a dead one. Whatever little hope of such a thing the most sanguine may have had, been destroyed by the report of Charles O. Marquette, chairman of the committee appointed to investigate the Hotel Men's Association. Dy me noun men u abwubuuu.

The jso-called "reaction Jetty" pro- 1 posed by Prof. Haupt as a means of t maintaining' a fixed depth of water in t Atlantic City's inlet, was tried at Ar- c Pass, on the south coas tof Texas j and was proven to be a complete fail- , ure, according to the report of Mar- ( quette, who investigated the matter on the ground, and looked up the official records, his report being printed at _ in the Atlantic City papers. It also contained reports made at various times by government engineers on the Atlantic City Harbor project, and in a ^ period of twenty-five years, during c , which several official investigations g I and reports have been made, there has c . not been a single encouraging word or I phrase uttered in reference to the pio- j ject by any engineer who has examined 1 , into it excepting Prof. Haupt, and since hisjidea has b. en a proven failure j ! elsewhere, the last vestige of hope for , t a harbor of any kind at Atlanic Ci y is ; . removed. j Knox is looming up daily as the ' [ presidential candidate most likely- to , ' land the Republican nomination. There i are those who think that Pinnsylvauia, ' ~ being an assured Republican state, ( should not b considered in the selection of Republican candidates, while ' j there are others who believe that the ■ stalwart Republicanism of the great ( Keystone State, especially entitles it j to be recognized as a fitting state from which to select candidates for the ( great office on the Republican ticket New Jersey cannot do better tiian to , s stand by her .neighbor state in the 1 r matter. Lieutentant Governor Mur- ■ phy, of Pennsylvania says : "At the advent O' the new year, in r 4shich_a_ presidential nomination is to ; s be made, 1 am convinced, after carej fully looking over the Bituatiou, that t the^favorite son of Pennsylvania. Sen- . ator Knox, not only has the brightest i prospect for securing the nomination - but strategically holds the strongest r position of any candidate. "Pennsylvanians do not look upon - Knox's candidacy as that of a favorite '• i son, but as ,thatj of a man qualified in t every respect to hold the office, and a i man of the most meritorious record. 1 i Personally, I think him to be a man of ] remarkable prestige. His work in the . Attorney General's office has n vcr i been eclipsed, and his record is such as b to inspire pride in the breast of every • citizen of the State e "The strength of his candidacy is e augmented by the fact that in Pennsyl- , e vania we are unified, while i- other . - States where presidential possibilities h loom up there is dissension. o "I am convinced that when we have y chronicled the events of the present h year the happiest record made will be t that of the nomination of Philander O. i- Knox for President of the United States, and his friends are convinced that he will ^>e elected, for his record r and prestige extend throughout the country." * HAYE YOU SbEN THE UTEST MUSIC? it "Two Blue Eyre," ,e "-Dolly Dear," "There '8 Another Picture in my i- Mamma's Frame," t.
