CAPE MAY STAP AND WAVE SATURDAY," JULY it. 190B. Q J i ^ ii t m.

THE FOURTH , OF JULY A HOST SUCCESSFUL DAY AD tie Details of Celebration Falttfill/ Carried Oat and EreryMv Pleased The Fourth of July celebration was j a complete success and the Board of ) Trade deserves the credit for it As j we pointed out in Saturday's issue, a i great deal of bard work was expended j , upon it by the members of the committee, but they are perfectly satisfied since their labors yielded results. The | morning exercises were held in the big j ( tent on Stockton lawn and the tent , , was crowded. They consisted of music i by Whee lock's Indian Band, singing | by the band of on ; hundred young girls ■ ' attired in white and with sashes of j 1 the national colors, the reading of the j ' Declaration of Independence by E. W. Lloyd, Esq., Prosecutor of the Pleas of ' c Oape May county and u 'eloquent oration by Hon. I. T. Nichols of Bridge- 1 ' ton. The meeting then adjourned to j . witness the field sports, including j ' sack races, races of teams of two boys | each, three legged race, egg races and j * potato faces. THE BOAT RACES. g

In the, afternoon the power boat races j at Sch^lienger's Landing attracted a large crowd. There were three classes of boats and three series of races. The first class was motor boats in which | the entries were "Florence II," owned by Harry Hazelhurst ; "Annette II. " [ owned by F. Miller; and "Meteor," ] owned by B, I. Gibbon. The "Meteor" was the winner by 1 second, doing the five miles in fifteen minutes even. The second or cruiser class entries ; were "Deoorah", owned by J. F. | t and "Clisade," owned Ijy J. j Clifford Wilson. The winner was the | "Olisade," the Deborah being penal- j zed under the club rules, for doing the course under the speed trials. Time j for the five miles 34 minutes and 36 j seconds. The third or pleasure launch class entries were "Princess," J. Seise; "Catherine May," -C. H. Miller, and ! "Bess," B. I. Gibbon, the winner being the "Bess," in 38 minutes, tbej Princess being penalized twenty-one seconds for doing the course in less j than the trial time. THE SWIPING RACES. , j j

The swimming races, which were run as a side issue, under the auspices of the Cape May Yacht Club were a . complete success. These events con- j listed of a relay raoe of four hundred feet and a one hundred- yards handicap raoe. The relay race was won by the . "Cape May Yacht Club relay team," which consisted of the following young men, J. Spencer Lucss, James M. Lucas, E&rle L. Hackett and Charles McCarey. The individual one hundred yard handicap, .which was won by R.zo Brooks, was a carefully planned event. The handicaps were so arranged that the whole fifteen swimmers crossed the finish within the space of ten seconds. The success of these races was so great that the Yacht Club has offered more cups for a like contest ' next Saturday at the Inquirer's regatta. CAPE MAY VS. DENNISVILLE. | The base ball game beween Cape ' - May and Dennisville was attended oy ' ] fully a thousand people and it wa« a . very interesting game. The teams i were both < om posed of fine players. | but the Cape May team vjas considerably the better and played a game in ; which many fine features were introduced successfully, one of the most amusing being excecuted by Blakeley at aeoond, who after catching it, held ! the ball, after a player reached: first. Stites. pitcher, took position for delivery and the runner dn first was completely deceiveduntil he "played off" his base, when Blakeley tossed the ball to first end the runner was out. The i thousand got more than their moDey's worth, for there was an alarm of fire and fight between two cullud g emroen during the prog "is of the game. The 1 V cops soon stopped tne fight and the j I combination wagon soon [quenched the ' fire. The score : ■> OAPE MAY.
