DOINGS AT I YACHT CLlli) , SPEED BOAIS AND CRlilSERS I Tie Heleir and Nereides Win i the Molar aid Cruiser Class Respectively The annual speed races held by the Cape May Yacht Club took plac< Sat- . urday afternoon. The! day was any 1 thing but favorable and many of the | boat owners who had given it out as | their intention to vnter their hosts m I these races thought that they would I rather not take the chance of ruining I their yacr.ts for the season. The en- I tiies for this reason therefore, were I smaller than they have ever been under the present management of tne I club, and a great deal of regret was I felt that the rain should to a certain j ex; eat s| oil the afternoon's sport and | pleasured Commodore J. Clifford Wilson and ! chairman of tbe Regatta Committee | Benjamin Irving Gibbon having an«- : tensive and carefully laid ou« plan to j follow for this summer thought it] would be best to carry out this part j of it and not postpone the races. ' Therefore, under obviously disadvan- 1 tageous conditions, the event occurred. In the speed boat class there was but j one entry, by Mr. Gibbon, who having ] decided to hold the event to the chance ; of rtining the delicate mach inery of , nis boat and travelled around the course. This was not absolutely nec- j essary as he had already won the rare 1 by default, beiDg the only starter. The time made for the^two and one — half mile course in the harbor by his

boar, the "Meteor " was seven min- J utes and fifteen seconds. The name , "Meteor'" and the owner, B. L Gib- : will be engraved on the Cape ^ May Yacht Ciub stag handled silver cup, which is kept at the c ub . for this race. Mr. Gibbon has but to this event three times and he receives this <-up for good. The cruiser ' lass which raced undt* 1 I the same rulings as the speed i-oat, class battled against more adverse con- j I ditinns even than 'he "Meteor" as the j race was held in the ocean. The cop which was fooght for was donated by | ■ , Col. J. Warner Hutchins to be held by j r the Yacht Club until it had been won j three different years by the same best. The cm tries in this race were conSidj ering the conditions very favorable and the race itself was well contested | . and very interesting for those who j | braved the storm and followed tbe line of the boats. . The course which this class toot was , from the buoy at the Sewell's Point . end of the harbor out the inlet to Mei cray's snoals and back. The (total di'- . > | tance of this course is approximately ] . | eighteen miles and the time of the 1 j I winner under ne conditions was v ery I i good. ; I The race was won by the "Nereides" ; ; j owned by Francis Rogers, in two hours nine minutes and twenty-three seconds. , Tbe avorite, the "Clisade," owned by i Commodore J. Clifford Wilson, camein i 3 second, being less than two minutes j i 3 behind the winner. If what the popu- | 1 lar opinion of the yachting c'ass antic- ] 3 i pa ted ^had occurred tbe "Clisade" | 3 would have beaten the "Nereides" by 3 a larger margin than that by which it 3 was defeated. . The reason the Cotn4 modore's boat did not ceroe up to 4 everyone's expectations, was ihe fact 4 that one <ff the four cylinders was not 4 working and that the engine was gen5 erally out of its usually smooth work6 ing order. The time for the "Clisade" 1 was two houre eleven minutes and twofifth seconds.

The rest of the boats entered, the "Martha." owned by J. B. Newr kirk, and the "Evada," owned by Thomas G. Stockhausen, made ar in- ' ] teresting and exciting race for third s place. The final of the preliminary races of ] " the Inquirer Regatta was held at! • Ocean City last Friday. It now is com- " close to the final event between i he . winners of the four yacht clubs. Cape • May, Wildwood, Holly Beach and Ocean City, for the large cup to be given to the boat who wins this event and the title to the championship of the South Jersey seashore resoits. & This race will cause a great deal of o enthusias-n and bring a great many h outside people to tbe place at which it _ will be held. There is to be a meeting of the Commodores of tbe four yacht clubs and also tbe prominent i, men of the different cities, within the e next week or so, to decide where the , best place to hold the race would be '• and und*r what rules these races will • be held. Cape May has the harbor t, and a great many advantages over i. the other places and for this reason the races should be held ..here. On the '• other band, however, the enthusiasm which these events should call forth from all the lovers of Cape May and clean sport is not so great, perhaps, as n at some of the other places. Tnis will count seriously against Cape May's U getting tbe benefit which wjll be „■ reaped by the city that has the spirit )f and go enough in it to have the event c run on their waters. All should . therefore work together and do -H v they can to bring the races to Cape |B May's magnificent harbor. i ii x
