A NEW STATE NORMAL SCHOOL i J 1 FINE BUILDING AT MONTCLAIR ; Formal Openiis aid Interesting ' ✓Dedicatory Eiercises Which Many People Attended. Tbe new State Normal School at Montclair. N. J., was formally opened and turned ever to the State authori- ' ties by the committee of the State Board of Education under whose direc- ^ , ' tion it was erected. It is located in [' tbe upper section of Montclai.. N. J., 5 and will be known as the Montclair Normal School. The site selected for it is a beautiful one among the hills and when the laying out of the grounds is completed, it will be one of the show places of the «Ut=. The cost so far, has been $300,000 and the appropriation made for it by the legislature, was not exceeded. That the state . has received ample value for the expenditure there is no doubt, for tbe building an attractive one, built and equipped in the most thorough and complete manner. The opening was tmide a grand event, there being manv prominent peopie present from all sections of the state. The meeting was presided over by Hon. James L. Hays, president of the State Board of Education and Governor Fort made a ringing address in which he expressed his pride in the educational system of the state and his desire to assist in the advancement of the public schools by every means within his power. The building was formally handed over to the State Board by Hon. Edward Russ, of Hoboken, chairman of the committee, who was highly complimented by the various speakers upon the untiring zealjwbich had secured the satisfactory completion of the building in time for its opening at the beginning of the j school year, six months in advance of anticipations. Judgi Francis Scott, of Paterson, also of the State Board, delivered a mosc eloquent and interesting ' address, enlivened by may witty allu- j aions and Hon. Charles J. Baxter, j State Superintendent, gave one of the forceful and instructive talks of the occasion. Dr. Charles S. Cbapin, principal of the new school and Dr. James M. Green, principal of the Trenton Normal, were also among the speakers and made able addresses. The meeting was 'closed bv the sing- . ing of "America," by the entire | audience. The work of the school began September 19th, and the very first incident of the opening was the gathering together by the principal, of the faculty and students at the flag staff and the raising of the flag while " Amerida" waa sung. When the flag j was in place all joined in giving the | salute to the flag.
