; COMMUNICATION. Editor Cape Itay Star and Wave : JDear Sir:-Yo«r issue of last week 1 contained a caustic reply from the * virlli pen of the veteran editor of the f Newark Star, to an article* previously 1 printed in your valuable paper and I signed "Fairneas." If I have been 1 miainformed, and therefore, misrepre- 1 sen ted the Star, I am very sorry, and f readily and willingly offer my apology, A. forlhave.no desire to misrepresent | one, however much he may differ A his opinion from - me. Now, Mr. 1 as the article in question con- " tains mufh to which I take exception, J 1 hope you will kindly allow mc space F enough to reply to at least -one state- L • meets. ! Your correspondent says, "The p writer is a local [option "prohibitionist y of the extreme type of State Agent p Burke." I will not say [as your cor- 1 respondent says, that ' 'That is a stupid y falsehood, and the Individual who made 1 the statement did it without the £ slightest evidence and without knowl- j edge." I will not say that be is a y "liar," for I am loq much of agentle- £ man for that. Jior will I call bim a y "veradous" writer. Imt ^mpiy ft? he is mistaken, or it is a gratuitous as- x sumption 011 the pert of "your correa- v pondent. The figures given by roe in the arti- ^ cle to which exception was taken, y weretak'n from the newspapers and ^ while they may not have been as accurate as the later returns, they were p not as extra vagaot as the thumping , pluralities and the big majority state- 1 menu of the Star. The fallli g'oft In c the vote of Mr. FreUnghuysen was "because of opposition to bim by an Automobile Club," and Mr. Matthews "was not popular," is a transparent explanation that does not explain. were other reasons but the astute editor of the Star will not ad- 11 mit them, of course, rt was«the in- ® fluence of the Anti -Saloon League, nevertheless. This astute edi'or says: "Your veracious correspondent possesses an halludnation that the State is divided s two tribes, the people who don't u want saloons and the liquor iuterests," etc. This is a figment of the imagina- • tion of one aroused to a high state of nervous excitement, or of one possessed of an hallucination or a phantasm, j There is no foundation in fact for j such a statement, for I do not believe ^ anything of the kind. Nor am I "subI limely ignorant" of the liberal sentiijment" of the people of New Jersey, and of their "cosmopolitan ideas and ^ ways." My chief contention is that ( our present liqour laws hre unjust, un c democratic and un-American, and v our • vigorous writer. Mr. Editor, admits « this when he says : "In the near future , I the liquor question will be settled on a | j rational basis, that is to say, with a ' j recognition of the rights of all the pto- J u pie of the State." J I Your corre«ponoent further says: "A | j clergy man *ho mixes mostly with 1 j women and children has contracted ^ 'j ideas in secular affaire." — that i', ac- , [cording to the dictionary, "narrow, I mean, scanty" ideas of the affairs of j life I am surprised that a man claimins such 'a high staje of intelligence and possessing such vast knowledge of j ! conditions in his own State, and able to write with such vigor, should make j such a statement There is no class of professional men that know as much J about the affairs of life generally as the clergy, because they come mote in contact with the home and the condiI tions of home-life — the fountain spring 1 1 3 of the nation itaelf. Their hearts are often burdened with tales of trial, ' hardship, suffering and woe; of ] j wrongs, opprission and cruelty. The women and children are the principal j sufferers by the • aloon. A reliable ji e ] journal recently staled that the liquor I cosiness is responsibly annually for] 5,000 suicides, 3.006 murdered wives. I 1 1 60,000 fallen girls, 7.000 murders, . 40,000 widowed mothers, 100.000 orI phan children; 100.000 criminals, and] 100,000 drunkards who die annually, and forti-is loss, 100,000 boys must be] given hy the mothers of our land to , supply the saloon with fresh victims. The above is confirmed by a decision of the Supreme Court of the United States given some time ago. That Court says: "The statistics of every , State shows a greater amount of crime , and misery attributable to the use of ] ardent spirits obtained at these retail liquor saloons than to any other source." The Supreme Court is not made up of a lot of men with "contracted ideas in secular affaire, " nor can they be branded as "zealots without principles of honesty. " And now, Mr. Editor, permit me to say, that, "the women and children hav- rights, as _ well as the "cosmopolitan population" of the State, and "hairnets" means E to defend th. se r ghts The liquor d traffic is a parasite existing only by ] v the sufferance of the people, and has j no moral or inherent rigbi.to existence. 0 The Supreme Court of the United States says, it lias no inherent right as ® a business. >f A part of tbe decision is as follows ; u "There is no inherent right in a citizen to thus sell intoxicating liquors by * retail ; it is not e privilege of o citizen j •t of the Sta-e or of a citizen of tbe r- United Stales. As it is a business attended with danger to the comrauniti it may, as already said, be entirely prohibited, or be permitted -under such conditions as will limit to tbe utmost In perfect harmony with this decision individual State Supreme Courts, including the Court of; Errors ana Appeals of our own State l\avej rendered aimiliar decisions. - Fairness.
