LESSON 12.— SOLOMON'S DOWNFALL. 1 Kings II : 4-13 j Copyright. 1908 by 8. 8. T. Co. FtefaM kSlMuiUm ml i HOLDING ON Verse 4 : "When Solomon was old. " 8ome one remarked in the presence of 8lephen Girard, "Jacob Ridgeyay is a very rich man." "Why I didn't! know Jacob was dead." exclaimed Mr. Girard. "When did he dieT" l"He isn't dead." was the answer. "Then how do vou know he is rich?" said the j ahrewd old merchant. Until the battle of life is over it is never known what a man has won either of prosperity or character. Age has its traps as well as youth. Wild oats like wheat 1 can be sown in the fall as well as in the spring. No man can trust himself ; eitner at his inexperienced start or at I his enfeebled finish. Satan's power is constant, man's power weakens with »ge. So man needs God to hold and help. No man turns out badly in his old age unless the badness is in him. The loss of powers includes that of hid- i ing a bad heart. Trouble with Solomon was in his heart. He fell a victim of ' his own magnificence. As has many 1 another man. Bedazzled by the glit The Knock-out Blow. The blow which knocked out Corbet* Was a revelation to the prize fighter*. From the earliest days of the ring the knock-out blow was aimed for the Jaw, the temple or the Jugular vein. Stomach punches were thrown in to worry and Weary the fighter, but if a scientific man ' had told one of the old fighter* that the most vulnerable spot was the region of , Ike stomach, he'd have laughed at him ler an Ignoramus. Dr. Pierce Is bringing ; house to the public a parallel fact; that J thf stomach Is the most vulnerable organ I out of \he pnu ring as well aa In it. ' | ter of his own glory and mistaking p ' rade for prosperity' Solomon let go his : hold on God in the most dangerous part of the road. And of course he fell, as ^ you and every one will who lets go of | God. "I the Lord will hold thine hand and will keep thee." Isa. 48: 6; Pa. 1 119: 1 s 7. PROSPERITY. Verse 6: "Solomon did that which And he was the young fellow who had been given the understanding 3 heart to discern between good and I evil ! (1 Kings 3: 9). Solomon knew all right. So do you. The devil fooled him to choosing the evil and his life was an ignominious failure. Yonrs will be no exception. The world is or- • dered this way. The root of the evil , j was putting other gods for Jehovah. , : "The love of money is the root of all . | evil"— which is simply putting money for God. When man and Nation are , ! ttue to God they flourish. The best men in your towB and the United , States and Canada are your illustrai tions. Where is all thgt "wisdom" Solomon boasted in his twenties? Where is all the "wisdom" you hsd | before you got so prosperous? In i those old days what a "church worker" | you were ! One of the best Sunday , school teachers in town. That was be- 1 1 fore you built the fine house up on the : avenue an-i "got into society." j "Butted in" jour enemies say. Social | aspirations supplanted other aspira I j tions. Are you happy? Solomon was I wise. — like you. God orospeted him, — ' i like you. He deserted God,- like >*.□. His structure, tremDled. — so will yours. Sure. sure, for God has said it. Read this wonderful passage. Job 27 : 13-23, and see if it don'; fit your case. Jesus Crhis.t is the "only way of escape," now left to you. INGRATITUDE. Verse 9: "Jehovah was angry with Solomon. " . Dont' you think he had good reason to be? John Fritz, an old Coatesville boy, is the most honored Steel man in the world. He is the father and grandfather of the "Steel Kings." John Fritz took them when boys, carefully trained them, and gave tiiem the wisdom to discern between good and evil in steel. These Kings are now upon their thrones, living in palaces and carrying themselves in regal state as they can well afford to do. What would you think of them dishonoring' John Fritz who made them! Why, those men and all men love John Fritz. God Had done the same for Solomon. Does the same for you. Do I you love him — or dishonor him? Notice I . God's goodness. Tries to save him warning twice. Sent the Queen of Shebafto visit fhim. Remember Twbat she said : "Blessed be Jehovah thy God [ who delighteth in thee. " (I Kings 10: TtM). God will never speak to you louder than when some one congratulates you upon a religion you don't but are supposed to. If tbat ° don't bring you to your knees nothing f< will. She continues : "Happy are thy w happy these thy servants," and at soon as Solomon ^as dead these 11 "happy" people were'* ready to fly at y each other's throats in rebellion. There are lobs of godless "happy" homes Just y like Israel. Prosperous business, beau- U tiful palaces, father dies and then the p bad blood and the lawsuits and the breakup. Keep true to Gad and endure. v

WISDOM AND KINGDOM. Verse 11: "I will surely rend the Kingdom from tbee." Now you fellows know what is the matter with too and the cause of your failures. Solomon was faithless . to his trust and loses it You are faithless to your trust and God rends it from you. Note that word "rend." Power rends rocks. Lightning rends the oak. And God rends the kingdom. There is no "still small : voice" business. The way fof the transgressor it hard because of the "rending. " When we read Solomon's wisdom in the Book we can not understand why he did not repent Bat when we read the book of sinful human' nature in oar own hearts we do understand. Most of as can preach a great deal better than we can do. But Solomon did not have Jesus Christ to redeem his life as you and I have. We can be born again and start new no matter how old we are. (2 Cor. 26; 17). When wears "wise unto salvation" we have a greater wisdom than ever Solomon had and come Into a kingdom whose glory no pen can ever describe. Matt. 25 : 84; Luke 12: 82; Jas. 2: 5. THOSE LITTLE TOTS. Verse 12: "For David thy father's sake." David was dead but his faithfulness was still a force in the world and was saving Solomon from complete heartbreak in spite of his sins. When you are away from God you rob those little tot* there, playing on the floor. When you become a Christian and work for | God you earn a fortune for them. The I fortune of success.— right here on the earth. "For thy father's sake " That's the "open sesame." Have you never been struck in reading of successful men and women how many of tbem are the children of men who have given their lives to God's service and die poor.— or rather rich. Preachers, missionaries, teachers. Yet their boys " Presidents of everything, nations, railroads, steel trusts, etc. "For thy is father's sake." If you have turned ft your back upon God and have "no use 16 for churches or religion." you will be, >f punished as surely as Solomon 'was, j d and your worse punishment will bej >• that your sin will fall upon the heads of your children— those dear little tots j playing there upon the floor. Ex. I h 34:6.7. TOO BUSY FOR BOYS. 0 Verse 18: "I will give one tribe to 1 ' * thy son." - ! . 1 And the son was a fool. Ue was the ' ripe fruit of the harem, a choice pro- i duct of polygamy when there is no J . B Nathan to interfere. Solomon had no j ' B use for Nathana, was he not "wise," 1 1 and so the heir wa< all that was to be 1 1 expected. Ob those splendid proverbs ' ' 1 I —

be used to write. "Train^up a rhjM in e the way he should go." Fine,— but alas Solomon did not train. He knew 9 all right but was too busy. There are r others. The popular ides of Solomon • is that he was'ooe of. Hie world's great e successes. WiU some one rift up and t tell me how. i spend my life in creating a great business. With all its » show, it is full ot dissatisfied people - ready for dissension and goes all to i- piecea as soon as I am dead.
