ppCAPE MAY THE TERMINUS OF THE OCEAN BOULEVARD Fine Bridges to be Erected Along the Route. ' . Many Miles in View of the Ocean. Nothing Bnt Fine Scenery.
Probably the greatest boom New a g^rsey seashore resorts Have received B H^Dtri is the/ pn^osed ocean boule- a ^B8T which was provided for in the v bill passed by the state Legislature a a few weeks ago. t : This road is to be 126.,mile8 long. It will * connect Atlantic Highlands on j New York Bay with Cape May. It e ^will lopen every seaside resort now on t ^■timap to the patronage of the two , Pl^at cities of New York and Pbila- r delphia end the hundreds of smaller e towns. It will make a highway which, e in the opinion of observers, will in t time become the main street of a con- r tinuous town, which will stretch the entire length of the state's coast line. £ Cape May will profit more from it c than all other "resorts since it will be s Bite terminus and is in^a direct line, no j B| to make, n a meadows to cross. j ^^ftre are other roads provided for v bill. 2 These are to .connect the f seats^of every county with one [ ^H^r. The result will be a network JHptads throughout the state which j will not be surpassed by the roads in j any other part ^of |the "country. But t the chief object of the measure is the t ocean boulevard, which will be unique c and one ofjlhe most remarkable roads t in the world. ij ROAD NOT TO EXCEED $400,000. c According to estimates which have ' been made, the entire boulevard can be ' built at a cost not to exceed $400,000. * Its construction should not require 1 more than a few^years. Long stretches I of the proposed coast route have been buflt already by the different ccontiea, € and these, with slight improvement, t can be incorporated as a part of the j system. Bridges will be necessary in places, c Tbere ere iBtrttches of long sandy j coast where'tho road will have to be r built entirely. But nowhere along the proposed route are there serious c natural obstacles to overcome. j FromTuckahoe to Oape May the s boulevard will be within sound of the c ocean and often within sight of it y There will be sections where the conforamtion of the coast line will neces- , sitate detours inland, where pleasant t country scenery will replace the view t of the rolling waves. Part of the route 8 will be through the picturesque pine ? regions. ^ In the growth and expansion of the coast region the auto will play an im- ' s portant part It will open the entire £ coast to the pleasure-loving crowds of Greater New York. Governor Fort, uwho is one of the t most ardent supporters ;of the boule- £ Yard project, some months ago pre- * dieted that if the highway were built e there would be a* continuous line of a
homes, extending Jnorth and south from eities and small towns, , along the entire Atlantic oeast line, within ten years. There are other perwho believe this will come in half that time. The boulevard will begin at Atlantic Highlands, where is now built a hard, smooth roadway, admirable for automobiles, from this point southeast ward. It extends through the Rumsen new region, across the mouth of Nav- ' esink River, and meets the coast line at Seabright. From here to Oape May the road will never be beyond the reach of tidal water. From Seabright the road runs almost due south, through Long Branch, one j of the oldest reeortr along the coast, and Elberoo, Deal Beach and Allenhurst to Asbury Park. Here a detour 1 to be made around Ocean Grove, ' which is the private property of a corporation, and thence south again to Bradley Beach. This resort is nestled between Fletcher and Sylvan lakes. Leaving J the road will lead southward , through Avon, Belmar. Como' and j , aristocratic Spring Lake to the state ! ( camp grounds at Sea Girt. From here ! the sea is in sight for sixteen miles, j ( part of tne coast contains some ( of the handsomest summer residences | in the country. Just below Sea Girt is Point Pleasant and its {neighbor, j , Head, where Barnegat Bay comes an end. GOES THROUGH FORESTS. Here the road leaves the coast and I ' enters the pine regions. Passiug I through forests and cedar swamps, s is reached. Thence th* road is to extend southward, through j ' to Toms River, after which I i passes through Waretown and Bar- i ' negat to Tuckerton. | < Turning westward, the next portion j • of the route is through picturesque | ' of cedar to New Gretna, then ' southward through Port Republic and < to Absecon, from where ' t Atlantic City is first seen. It is at Pleasantville, a few miles j further south, that the extension of I . the road across the marshes to Atlan- K tic City will be built. The long ride i ' across marshes inhabited by billions of 1 mosquitoes will deter many from <j leaving the main boulevard to get to Atlantic. The main thoroughfare will continue 1 southward from Pleasantville to Somers Point, where the Tuckaboe river will { be crossed by a long drawbridge, the ( southern end of which will be at Beas- j ley's Point. Thence it is a pleasant I trip of thirty miles through Cape May i through Ocean View to Cape ' May Court House. Here the road * turns slightly to the southwest and ; ends in Cape May, at Sewell's Point r and the great harbor. «
