THE BERMUDA YACHT RACE ; NEREIDES II IN SECOND Fraacis Rtgers latar Bast aarrawlj escapes racks ' aid wreck E The Nereides U, owned: >7 Mr. Francis C. Rogers, of Camden, who r was on board the boat, was the secooS of the power craft to arrive in the j record race from New York, to Bermuda, and the offioiala gave her a finishing time aa Uh. 30m Thursday morning, and the time of her paaaage a aa 91h. 10a. Incidents of the moat thrilling nature j marked the final stages ot the Nereides n II' ■ paaaage. The boat and those on board were in peril for a time. The i. boat was off the island at half past t seven o'clock this morning. She waa then abort of gasolene and ber engine t waa stopped. The boat waa then placed in tfts worst possible plight. Anchor , was mode near North Rock. J In the strong easterly wind the hemp 'T cable and the anchor, ' dragging over the coral reefs, were lost. Then Captain Bieling anchored the boat a second time, using a wire cable. That almost | immediately parted, and the vessel waa g in greater peril than ever. K | There was nothing left to do in order I to save ber but to use the sails which were allowed to each boat in order to jg i meet - such an emergency, and the Nereides II' s canvas was set For 4 | two miles she was sailed along .the t. | edge of the reefs. ,t With strong efforts on the part of ' the now almost worn out engineers the jj j engine was started again and again, but it could not be worked more than ;t ' five minutes at each attempt, owing to g. : the scarcity of gasolene.
With the conviction that tt was imi possible to get the Nereides off shore through the reefs Captain Bieling adopted the perilous plan^f running the reef to the finish line. It was taking the chance of his life, but he and the boat finally reached the harbor of St. George's. In passing the reefs she struck twice, but not heavily enough- to seriously damage the hull. The engine made its expiring efforts when St. George s was 1 reached, and then the h Y Herald boats rendered valuable assistance by keeping the Nereides from going on the reefs again until another boat her a line and towed ber well into the harbor and to a safe berth. The deposits of Security Trust Comare constantly increasing ; if the management was not good and conservative, this would not be so. YOUNG WAH CHINESE LAUNDRY 316 Washington street.
