THE NEREIDES II ARRIVES SHE IS IN FINE CONDITION. Francis Rogers, Owier, finally Pleased with Work of Boat • oi Trip to Bemida Dancing across the waves as lightly as the sea foam and as swiftly as the gulls which screamed ovechead. Nereides II safely crossed the bar Thurs day night at 7:30 and dropped anchor within the harbor. The Nereides as she lay at anchor in the harbor this morning forms a very pretty picture, ahdwing veiy little the effects cf a long cruise. * During an interview with our correspondent Friday .morning at the Yacht Club, Francis Rogers, the owner, said, "We left Hamilton 6 o'clock Monday morning and came right through without any trouble at a'l, reaching the bar at 7:30 Thursday night. It was a very pleasant run." Mr. Rogers left the Nereides and met a host of friends and callers at the Yacht Club where he will stay for a short time. Nereides II, which participated in the recent motor boat race from New York to.Bermuda, flies the colors-of the " Cape May Yacht Club. Her owner is the youngest enthusiast who has ever entered in the Bermuda race, Mr. e Rogers having taken his degree this 1 year f om the University of Pennsyl- ® vania. Nereides was designed by H. N. Whittelsey, of New York City, r and was built by the Stamford Motor f Company, of Stamford, Conn. She is • 55.80 feet long over all, her waterline '| is 4.72, her waterline beam is 10.30 feet, and she draws 5 feet. Her 8 motor is a heavy duty Sterling, built by the Sterling Engine Company of - Buffalo, a four-cylinder motor, bore 1 6>t inches, stroke 8 inches, and is rated » at 40 h. p. Her propeller is a three • bladed wheel, 35 inches diameter, 40 9 inches pitch. Nereides carries about a ton of ballast. About half of this is in lead on her keel, and the rest in pigs carried in the bottom of tier hull. Her designers state that they have figured that a heavy type of boat will prove more serviceable for open sea work than a lighter craft. Her frame | is of white oak 2)£x3J{ inches, spaced j 10 inches on centers, .and she is planked ! with lj^ inch yellow pine and cedar, 1 copper fastened. She carries about j 500 gallons of gasolene. Her rating j j figured out 31.95, and ner tjme allow- I | ance ia 7h. 23m. 24a. The crew of I ! Nereides II consisted of Walter M. | Bieling, captain : Michael Howard, | 'navigator; F. Greno, F. Druar, en-; gineers; Clarence Godshalk, R. M. Haddock, F. Thurber. J. McCreery. • W. T. Cassidy. and her owner, Francis C. Rogers. Ventilation is accomplished j by means of three high, sheet iron I cowls on her forward deck. Nereides was the only one with two masts, which made her easily distinguishable. , MISS BENNETT ENTERTAINS A delightful social evening was spent Monday last by a number of young j foiks at a party given by Miss Ella ' I Bennett, at the home of her parents, ' j Pilot and Mrs. Judson Bennett, Wash- | ington street, in honor of their guests, ! THE COUNCIL 1 - PROCEEDINGS I . BUSINESS OF SPECIAL BFHINfi j t The But Contract is Biscratl Aid Cntract Coifiraed ■ Ti Br. Pirter ' At a special meeting of Council beid ; 2 on Friday evening last, the contract . . for supplying a band for the city was ; b duly awarded to William Porter. The f rumor that Mr. Porter had employed 9 the Clayton Cornet Band caused the 9 question to be reopened at m special • meeting held Wednesday evening. Mr. 9 Suelke having made the motion at the Friday evening's meeting awarding the - contract, asked ap explanation of the t matter, of Mr. Porter. Mr. Porter > admitted that ne had secured a part of l his men from Clayton, but be bad other / 1 1 from New York, Philadelphia and other . places. Mr. Moore then asked bow ' many men he had employed from Olayton and he said "fourteen. " Thit would 1 1 leave nine- to be brought from other -4 - places to complete the contract num- J 1 ber of twenty-three. Mr. Moore then 4 stated that he was opposed to this ar- I 1 rangement because a bid had been j ' received from the Clayton Band for j 2 33875 and the contract had been A 9 awarded Mr. Porter for 35000 in order J r to secure better music than Council j believed the Olayton Band could furn- 1 ' ish. By awarding the contract direct fl - to the Clayton Band the city would 1 have saved 31126, and he thought we j . would not be getting what we were 1 r paying for if this band were employed. J 3 He said he regretted that the circum- | ■ stances had sriBen, but we represent j 1 the taxpayers and it is our duty to get j " the best we can for oar money. ^ Mr. Porter then said that his salaries 4 f alone would be about 3400 per week I ■ and his men would be found first cIms. j 1 Mr. Suelke then said that he would ' ] '■ not withdraw his motion awarding tta— , ' contract. The band is to be known as 1 "Porter's Marine Band. • The Committee on Street was in- j • tions for the erection of a building at ' ' the sewerage disposal plant for the 1 bousing of some of the new machinery ' 1 and advertise for bids.
