THE LOWER TOWNSHIP FIGHT SOME POINTED FACTS RECALLED People of Township With Good Memories and will not Reward the Unworthy Q The people of Lower Township have been treated to the sort of agitation for a few weeks past which it wae thought three years ago would not soon recur. The announcement by James T. Hoffman of his candidacy for Assessor was followed by the circulation of absurd accusations against Assessor Joseph P. MacKissic, Collector Charles Bohm. and Senator Hand, of the same character as those which are heard every time Hoffman is a candidate or is promoting some one else. If anybody in the Township can be deceived into believing such things as have beer studiously circulated, it is surprising. In most places this malicious mud slinging, used for the purpose of arousing prejudice reacts and deprives its instigators of the public confidence and support. The investigation of Hoffman's accounts by Philadelphia expert accountants interested only to get accurate facts, resulted in their, reporting a large apparent shortage and while political influence hindered the conclusion of the examinations and investigations, the disappearance of a wagon load oL township tax books from the office of the township's Solicitor, just before they were needed bv the Commissioner, Harry F. Douglass, in prosecuting the concluding investigations, speaks loudly to attentive ears of what was the actual condition of affairs.

1 I REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE FOR SENATOR
£ HON. ROBERT E. HAND 1 . — e
REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE FOR ASSEMBLY
CHRI8TOPHER S. HAND
r COMMUNICATED : S ■» I North Wild wood, N. J., Sept. 21 I WHY IS SENATOR HAND SO POP- 1 t ULAR WITH THE PEOPLE? 1 One hears the question every day of t his life. "Why is Senator Hand so pop- 1 ular with the people of Cape May c County?" and in connection with the t question are sometimes heard remarks , criticim of him and his mode of living. I Now in answer to such questions and t criticisms! I would reply from long ex- I perience in political matters that to de- 1 feat a given candidate for any office it i | is important to show that either he is i } unfit from lack of knowledge or that \ I he is dishonest and not to be trusted. 1 t These are really the two cardinal prin- t ( ciples in political life that are essen- 1 s tial to.'success. In all the years that I t j have known Senator Hand. I have 1 I never heard a political opponent make s the assertion that be was not honest 1 with his constituents and true to the , principles of his party. On the con- < trary, I have heard hundreds of peo- t ' pie, both friends and foes, say that he t was always ready and eager to listen 1 to their appeals on any measure before I the Senate Chamber and if their state- 1 ments bad any merit, could be depend- 1 ■ ed upon to do all that he could for 1 , them, regardless of political faith or 1 ■ faction. Now we can all judge of his 1 | ability to secure ^consideration for bis i . County, of which he is justly proud, by 1 his past record, an open book which all : 1
may scan if so disposed One will hear now and then that the Senator has disappointed them in matters of some 1 state patronage, that he has broken : word in not securing certain appointments that they particularly de- ■ sire. Not being in possession of all 1 the facts in regard to promises that 1 or may not have been made, I could not defend him to the letter, but will venture the assertion that he did ALL that was in his power to stand by friends and to fulfill any promises that he may have made. Anyone that any political experience at all, must know how powerless the Senator the hands ot his political ^periors office. If they • do not keep faith ' with him, it is impossible for bim to 1 his promises. If seems to the 1 writer that a fair and just answer to 1 all such criticisms is to compare Sena- ' Hand's r»cor«l with any other pub, lie man's record in Cape May County 1 and see if be js not the super- 1 of almost anyone you can recall. One of the favorite modes of attack 1 Senator Hand by disreputable, small fry politicians, is that he is not a 1 strict temperance man. I doubt very 1 much if any one ever beard the Senaattempt to defend himself for any 1 mistakes be may have made or com- ' mitted, nor have I ever beard anyone accuse him of; being a HYPOCRITE in He is just plain "Bob" Hand 1 and will always remain so. He started ■ the bottom .round of the ladder ' and has made a success of lite and if : you do not think be has taken care of

; nis family in a proper manner, always having their welfare at heart. Just call at his handsome home where you will receive a hearty welcome from a good and loving wife. In rdfeard to Senator Hand's appoint- ! ments to minor offices, be is accused of c ihowering all his favors on relatives of < 1 nis family. This is not true, but even I if it was, and|there*sbouldibe any relaj tive-in any position in the gift of the { I government, I have never heard a sinI gle criticism in regard to their ability ! to fill the position. Again you must | bear in mind that the name of "Hand" is one of the most numerous names in Cape May County and that the Senator ' ' married into a large family of gtrls ! that married men, as they'should, capI able of filling any position in the gift ' of the people. In all fairness should they be disbarred from office simply from the fact'that they married a good wife out of the same family? This criticism is all sham. It is useful to learn I to know sham when you see it Usually it is plainly apparent and deceives no one but the shammer, but often it is subtle and only by studying men, watching their actions closely and their treatment of other men can their real character be discovered and understood. It is not good policy to distrust a man because he dresses and acts like a gentleman. He may do all that and still be a gentleman, but when you bear him talking about the'importance of being a gentleman and the prerogatives of the higher classes and the advantages of birth — LOOK OUT FOR HIM. Possibly he is dnly a harmless snob who can only injure himself by his fo'ly. It is also probable that he may be one of those human sharks whose business it is to prey on honesty and frankness and who is to be avoided ' as you would a tiger in the jungle. • Self respect and happiness come with franknesE [and simplicity. Watch for : shammers, you are what you are and 1 if there ia any good in you, it will come out but no amount of pretending - will ever make you more than an easily . detected and cheap imitation of your : superiors.
