: ANOTHER BARGE IS WRECKED The tragic fate of Barge No. 21 in the service of the Breakwater Oon- : f tract ion Company, at Oold Spring In- : let, was witnessed by the lookout man, in the tower of tbe Uold Spring life l saving station. When the ebb tide beI gan running out the inlet on Monday I morning at 9 o'clock daring the south- ' east storm the current was very swift [ and Barge No. 21 was moored within , the inlet with a deck load of stone held ! by five heavy hausers. That ahe would 1 break away from these and from her anchors was not believed possible, but break away she did and drifted rapidly i"1 toward the end of the stone piles. Tbe company's tug "Resolute" steamed up and was within fifteen feet • of her when she had reached the end 1 of the stone pile. The only man aboard of her had come on deck and the tug men prepared to throw him a line but 1 he left the deck, went into the cabin, and did not again appear. The tug i contained ten men and a panic was created among them by the rapidity with which she was approaching the i stone and she was saved from deatruc- ! tion only by prompt action. The barge meanwhile drifted outside and when the heavy surges struck her she staggered uncertainly and suddenseemed to Jose her balance and turned completely over. The man was seen on her bottom for a short time but before the life savers could reach her the barge went to pieces and the man disappeared. From the time the was seen to be adrilt until she went to pieces, but twenty-five minutes bad elapsed. The wreckage was strewn along shore during the afternoon. The barge w as valued at $5500 and was insured. The man who lost life in the wreck was Oaptain Matthew Cooper. Oold Spring life saving crew, under Captain Sooy, and the Two Mile Bench crew, under Oaptain Frame Hoffman, both were in action. The barge was the property of the Philadelphia Transportation and Lighterage Oompany, of Philadelphia. This is the fifth vessel lost here eiuce the jetty work was begun. Tbe velocof the wind was 36 miles. The remains of Matthew Cooper, drowned as above, on Monday, were fouud by William Rowland, of the Oape May Light and Power Company, on Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock, opposite the Oarlton House, Cape May Point Coroner Reeves was notified and held an inquest after which a who cauie down on Tuesday, took charge of the remains and removed ihem to the home of the family in Chester.
