tut fwinnf rrtinni Tffi MBUfli offluULi Lewon I.— Second Quarter, For ! April 3, 1910. J ' the internatiohal series. ! Tut of th, L.I.OO, Matt, fx, 1S-34. Mamory Vwsaa. 28, 29_Gold»n T.xt, ' Mark Ix, 23— Commentary Prepared I by Rev. D. M. Stearns. ^ This lesson gives an account of four I different acts of healing upon five dlf- < ferent people— the ruler's daughter. ' twelve years of age;.the woman twelve £ years sick, the two blind men and the demon possessed dumb man. Matthew, j c Mark and Luke record the first two.lr but Matthew alone tells of the others I ' All are equally easy to Him to whom j | nothing Is difficult when there Is eonfi- L dence In Him. The principle of verse j g 29 holds all through. "According to j your faith be it unto you." But we g must always remeiqber that these c were samples of the kingdom which 0 was then at hand, but because of His jj rejection postponed till He shall come 7 again. As 1 understand it, we cannot j
J expect kingdom manifestations In this d age of His rejection except as He may g j In great grace see fit to grr#t tbem d . But as the age draws to a close, which h It is rapidly doing, we may look for f greater signs as the kingdom of 8 1 heaven again draweth nigh. May we. J 1 like Stephen, be full of faith and of \ i the Holy Ghost, full of faith and 1 power. * The other accounts of the first two _ healings are found In Mark v and I t Luke via There we are told that the b . man's name was Jairus; that he was a - ruler of the synagogue; that he fell | down at Jesus' feet and besought Him f greatly, for his little daughter was '■ lying at tbe point of death, and she ■ was his only daughter. Jesus arose ; and followed Jairus. and so did His disciples, and much people also folI lowed Him and thronged Him. Con- ; sider the anxiety of the father's heart : and his expectation, for, although be : had not heard the words "I will come f and heal her" (vill. 7). was not the Lord Jesus Christ with him, and ; was not tbnt assurance enough for f Jairus? 1 But In the throng that pressed upon ' Him there was one desolate heart— a ■ woman who had been ailing for twelve years and. having spent all that she I had npon physicians, was nothing bet 1 tered, but rather grew worse. She i having beard of Jesus, bad such couti- I ' dence In Him that she said within her self. "If I may touch but His clothe- j I shall be whole." She according!;. | pressed through the crowd behind Him. touched the lnu-dor of His garment and was Instantly healed of her i lUuess of many years. Most gratefully and gladly would she have slipped away without trou I bling Him further, but He had more 1 for her than she had dared to expect He had a personal word for her heart full of peace aud assurance. Before she could get away Jesus, knowing all things, asked who touched Him. for he knew that virtue had' gone out of Him. The disciples were surprised at His ouestioli. Seefns- so manr toorhlne Him
but the woman came with fear aid trembling, fell down before Him and before all the people declared why she had touched Him and how she had been Immediately healed. Then came to her the added, unexpected blessing In His precious words to her heart: "Daughter. be of good comfort: thy faith bath made thee whole. Go In peace aud be whole of thy plague." Instead of tbe I unrest she might have had because ' she had. as It were, stolen a blessing, j she had His own word of "peace." Then she might have bad some syuif, 1 totns of a recurrence of her trouble.] and tbe devil would be sure to be on 1 hand with some unrestful suggestions.: but now she bad not only an experi- { ence. but His Infallible word that 8b«j was healed, and had He uot called her "daughter." and wasn't that worth | while? Let all secret believers confess j Jesus Christ publicly and see what ad j , dltiona! blessing will surely come to j • But all this delay has seemingly j made Him too late to help tbe little ! girl, for before He reaches the house ] ; messengers come, saying that she Is I < dead. As soon as Jesus heard it Hen said to Jairus. "Fear not. believe only. ' ! and she shall be made whole" (Luke ■ vill. OOi. And quickly it is even so. and she Is alive and well and eating like ! any well child. Only the father and the j mother and Peter. James and John were ( present a1 the raising to life— Just seven, j including Jesus aud tbe little girl, the ! unbelieving Roomers all without. Let I us be "most surely believers, kuowing the certainty" of all His words (Luke , I. l-4>. He Is liever too late, and Doth- ] ing Is too hard for Him who created I all things. Two blind men follow Him into the ' next house, into which He enters, begging Him to have mercy on them. His < die question was. "Believe ye that I ' am able to do this?" Their affirmative 1 reply brings His "According to your faith be It unto you." then His touch, and they see like other men; yet, unlike many, they see Jesus, their healer, and start forth to spread abroad His fame. ' The next case is a dumb demon possessed man. «nd by a word he is healed. No wonder that the multitudes said. "It was never so seen In Israel." for one Uke this had never been seen before. Whether we touch" Him or He ; touches us or speaks the word. His 1 power is manifest. May we all touch j Him In the consciousness of our helplessness and need, as the long suffering woman did. and not indifferently, like the crowd.
