IDE mr SCHOOL to " boa II Far % WHWiMa .. THE INTERNATIOpli SkllES. j!)****! rttiew. AnW v i > w r v.„., at » OoW^e Text, Matt, x, ^-Commentary r Prepared by Rev. D. M. 8tearn». s This la the only lessqp have on g the whole of that most Important «ecc' tloo, chapter x. and we begin with the closing words of chapter Ix; telling of 0 Jesus going everywhere preachlng§be r gospel of the kingdom and showing the power of the kingdom to mortal bodies, healing every sickness and ev1 ery disease. The shepherdless condl- . tlon of the nramtadw filled Him wjth I compassion for them, and the plentl- 1 1 fffi harvest and scarcity of laborers ' 1 led Him to say to His disciples, "Pray ' ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, 1 ■ that He will send forth laborers Into J ' His harvest" There Is something so ( ; strangely mysterious about It all to us I r earthly minded people that we can- I . not grasp it except tne Spirit shni) ] - enlighten us. Here Is the Lord of ( the harvest Himself, the King of the ' kingdom, manifesting niw power over j the souls and bodies of people and over wind and wave and full of compassion , ' tor people, but. He wants associates 1 from among men to whom He can I Intrust His power that they may go c forth in His name and do as He had S ! Iieen doing. That is all wonderful, re- 1 I minding us of Isa. vl, 8. where we hear the one living and true God In the I persons of the Trinity Baying, "Whom ; shall I send and who will go for us?" The wonder on our part Is that so I ! few respond to such 'an honor. But why should He ask us to ask Him or Bis Father to do this? Is It that in asking Him we may offer ourselves, c saying. "Here am I; send me?" Would £ we be honest In asking Jesus Christ p ; to send forth laborers Into the wide b world to work for His great cause If we did not first offer Him our- w | selves? I' 1 After an all night of prayer to God 8 He had chosen twelve that they might b with Him and that He might send g them forth, and now He gives them o: j all the power that He had been maul- n 1 testing and sends them forth by two a, and two to preach the kingdom of God h and to heal the sick (Mark 111, 13; Luke f. vl, 12; lx, 2). When the kingdom comeswe shall find the twelve apostles (some °'
B one In Judas' plage) on twelve throDes * ruling the twelve tribes of Israel '• (Matt, xlx, 28). but It will still be His power conferred upon them. It is d true now and always will be— apart from Him, nothing. All power In 1- heaven and on earth is His. How Is e It that we know so little of It? Are 1 we not wholly His, fuUy yielded, slm- ' ply trusting, willing and obedient? g Has He not said. "As the Father sent _ Me. so send I you?" These twelve , were, however, to go only to Israel at - this time, not to gentiles or Samari1 tans (verses 5. 61. And to the woman 1 of Canaan we hear Him saying. "I am f not sent but onto the lost sheep of f the house of Israel" (Matt. xv. 24 1. He f worketb all things after the counsel , of His own will, according to His good pleasure which He hath purposed In , Himself, and we must be fully In that ; purpose and will, whether It refer to . the Jew, gentile or the church of God ! (Eph. 1, 9, 11; I Cor. x, 32). Dr. Scofield says In his notes on this chapter ' that the mission of the twelve was that of heralds, announcing to Israel ; only the kingdom as at hand, endued 1 With the divine credentials of their office and manifesting kingdom powers. Verses 16 to 23 cover In a general sense the sphere of service during this present age. while verse 23 has in view the preaching of the remnant In the time of the tribulation and Immediately preceding the return of Christ In glory. The remnant then will not have gone over the cities of Israel till the Lord cornea If any cannot receive this suggested division let him lay to heart the general principles, remembering that all need to hear of the grace of God. the present Salvation byegrace, the dally life of service, the ehduement of the 8plrlt for that service and the coming of Jesus Christ to set up His kingdom. In this age we are commanded to go Into all the world and cHve the i?n,nni jj give
1 to every creature (Matt xxvili. 19, 20; Mark xvl, 15, contrasted with Matt, b x, 6), our object being not the conver- '- slon of any part of the world, but the . gathering out of all nations a people , for His name (Acts xv, 14), that He f may come again with these called out ones to reign over the earth (Rev. v. ' 9, 10). a We must give more attention to bee lng faithful messengers than to caring 1 for onr personal needs. If we are faithful He will see to onr need (Matt. » vl, 35 ; Ps. lv. I9i. It will help ns t to remember that He counts all good r or ill treatfficnt of His messengers as - done to Himself (verses 22-25. 40-42). ' It Is an evil world. We most expect persecution, but we must not fear to I Ale for His sake (16-18, 28-31). He must be more to us than the dearest " en earth or than life Itself (37-39). Re- , member the analogy "sheep In the 1 ' midst of wolves" (16) and that the call- ' ' lag ot sheep Is *0 be fleeced and killed 1 and eaten. In special emergencies we ' can count upon the 8plrlt to do the ! talking through ns 09. 20), but He , should always be allowed to do this. 1 All service shall be rewarded (verse 42; xvi, 27; Rev. xxll, 12). What reward can compare with being one with Him for time and eternity? (Bom. rill, r 16; Rev. Ill, 2L) d
