"""J" TO CELEBRATE "HYDRANGEA DAY" Thomas Maitidale's Suggestion Which : Win he Acted Upon. The "Poor Richard's CSub of Philadelphia, of which the Author-Hunter-Mer- 1 chant, Thomas Martidsle it the preei ' dent, was here on Saturday and after , stopping at Arnold's for Urn annual ' luncheon and a change from the street 1 clothing to bathing suits, they took their famous "hike" along the beeches to Wildwood. Several prominent members ' of the local Board of Trade met them j there and joined them at lunch, at the 1 conclusion of which there was the usual speech making and Mr. Martindale ( spoke of Cape May's favorite flower, the hydrangea, and said that nowhere did 1 this beautiffil flower grow so perfectly as at Cape May. "Luxurious, gorgeous, ' muti-colored it~ts one of Cape May's glories and it should be celebrated." Cape May should establish an annual ' •"Hydrangea Day," and make of it a ' day devoted to flowers and their beauty, a tribute to bounteous nature, said he, "and if you will do so 1 will bring a thousand lovers of the beautiful, to your city to aid in the celebration." The ides 1 is a grand one and should be acted upon without delay. SOME NOTABLES AT CAPE MAY j Secretary of State, Philander C. appropriate on the beach is not appropriate on the streets and there is some not lit anywhere. WHERE THE CRABS COME FROM. Maryland leads all other states in the crabbing industry. Crabs, however, exist all along the Atlantic coast from Mass a cliusetts to Mexico, and as far into the interior, as the salt water readies the tributary streams. The chief supply of crabs comes from Cheasapeake Bay, which is famous for its oysters, terrapin fish, and cuuvas back ducks. Delaware Bay is also noted for its crabs and lish. Delaware Bay ih now the only place where a business is made of capturing the king crab, and it is only there, as far as is known, that special forms of • apparatus have been devised for taking - the crabs, whicu are ground upin ferti- * lier factories. Found nets built along the New Jersey shore of the Delaware j Bay catch a million and a half of king | crabs annually. Tbe sounds all along the sea coast ! of New Jersey yield each year great quantities of crabs. A SUMMER WARNING When a lady you would woo Curb the force of your devotion; Don't, as many lovers do. USE NEWSPAPERS ONLY Experts TeBs Why Seek Advertising! Mediums Are Best j The newspaper is the beet advertising! medium in existence; declares G. W.l Johnson, an advertising expert of Buf 1 falo, X. Y, who makes a •specialty of] raising large snms of money for cliari-J table purposes in short spaces of tinjE Mr. Johnson relies entirely upon ad vertising to accomplish his ends. In tan days he raised $300/100 to build .*. Y M. C. A. for Buffalo. In s published interview he says, among others things/ "The newspaper is the best thing there is in advertising because it reaches tbe home. It stands in exactly tbe sam| relationship to the community as does the physician to his patients or the clergyman to his congregation. "In a local advertising campaign the ' home must be reached. All nrticks used in a home are advertised, of course, and tbe women of this country do more than 90 per cent of the general buying for the home. _.i newspaper reaches tbe woman, thereby placing before them the good qualities or new Ideas of t|ft ' article advertised. "Every newspaper naturally has soma , standing in the community through , which its circulation carries it Take, ! for example, a newspaper of tbe very ! highest type." Any article advertised in that paper gains a prestige in proper- ! tion to the standing of the pepcr. In other words, a newspaper gives to its advertising its own standing." ( Ocean City Defeats Cape May, 6 to 5 REPLETE WITH EXCITING SITUATIONS Pitchers are Hit Hard, Fritx and Geig < Drive for Home Runs, Loveland Clouts For Three-Bags— Rotten Decision Gives 1 Ocean City Run That Proves Winner. Before the largest crowd that has witnessed a game in Ocean City this sum- . mer fully 1200 people being present, ' Cape May received their second defeat of ihe season, in a game full of action and exciting situation from start to finish. Both teams put a nice game but Cape May played best in the field, going through the game without an error, 1 although^ a mixup in the outfield be- ' Wood and Howe, when both started for a fly ball and each noticing the other coming at full speed, stopped
and allowed the ball to fall safe, a run coming in on the play. Ocean City made five errors only one of which re- [_ suited in a score. Both teams hit the ball hard Ocean City getting 11 hits, e including home run by Fritz and Geig t and a two-bagger by Barry. Cape May ( bit safe nine time, Loveland leading with a triple and a single. a Although Ocean City tv6n^ the score y that gave them tbe contest was obtained r through the generousity of the umpire, [ bis decision on a play at the plate being one of the rankest ever given on a L ball field. e Ocean Gty scored their first in the j second inning. Stephenson walked. # Sweeney safe on fielder's choice. Fritz j- also safe on fielder's choice, Stephenson being caught at the plate. Sweeney going to third. Fritz tried to steal-but Sattizahn pegged to second, Loveland j | receiving the ball, tagging Fritz out, and 1 I -making a quick return to the plaid j headed off Sweeney by about five feet\ 1 1 As Sweeney came tearing down the line, the umpire yelled, "slide, slide!" Sweeney did but Sattizahn had him blocked. The umpire hesitated, glanced around at the crowd, and then called him safe. Cape May team then gathered around the limp- and expressed their opinion of his decision in a forcible' manner. The ump in return ordered four Cape Mayplayers out of the game and refused to allow the contest to proceed. This caused a delay of about fifteen minutes, when a treaty was signed and the game continued. Fritz hit for a home run over left fence in the fourth, bringing in Ocean City's second score. Cape May scored one in the fifth on hits by Loveland, Aldendifer and Deibert. Cape May scored again in the sixth. Howes was safe on an epror by Sweeney; and sacrifices by Cozens and Loveland brought him acro3s the pan. Score 2 to 2. Hall went on the mound in the fifth, but was not in his usual form and was Ait freely. Ocean City soored two more in the sixth. Sweeney received a pass, and Fritz was hit by pitched ball. Beck hit a high one to left center, the " ball dropping between Wood and . Howe, Sweeney scoring. Howe made a beautiful throw to tbe plate catching Fritz Fish fanned. Barry connected for two cushions scoring Beck. Morey struck out Score 4 to 2. Ocean Gty got twe more in tbe seventth on a single by Months » and a , home run drive over right field fence by Geig.
