A BEANS FROM SCHOOL GARDEN ' Practical results are more convincing ! tlian anything else and a basket of : string beans presented to the County ; Superintendent of Schools yesterday by B. S. Ryland, of the colored Baptist : Church, is convincing evidence that the school garden proposition is worthy of [every consideration. The beans in quesI tion were raised by a number of colored j children who were started by Miss | Laura Woodward, one of the faculty ol the Summer School, who is ardent in her advocacy of school gardens. A patch of ground almost directly back of the Franklin street school building was secured and work begun about the middle of July. It was covered with growth than a man's head. It was surprising bow rapidly it was cleared by the fhildren under Miss Woodward's direction. It was then divided into sections and planted Miss Woodward left the miniature farm in Rev. Ryland's care, when she departed at the close of the school and its development is proof of the attention he and the children have given it. Efforts are to be made to secure a school garden in connection with each school in the county during the present school year.
